Obama Judge Blocks Trump’s Effort to Defund Sanctuary Cities.

A far-left San Francisco judge, appointed to the bench by former President Barack Obama, ruled on Friday that the Trump administration cannot cut federal funding from dozens of cities and counties that have been designated as “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants. Judge William Orrick—in the U.S. District Court Northern District of California—extended a preliminary injunction blocking the administration from withholding federal money or placing specific immigration-related conditions on grant programs.

The ruling protects more than 30 sanctuary jurisdictions, including major cities such as Los Angeles, Baltimore, Boston, and Chicago. Orrick also blocked the administration from placing similar immigration-related conditions on two grant programs. According to Orrick, Trump’s actions to withhold funding from these jurisdictions constitute unconstitutional coercion.

In January, Trump signed an Executive Order titled “Protecting the American People Against Invasion,” which cut off federal funding to sanctuary jurisdictions. The order directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to ensure that these jurisdictions do not receive federal money and to pursue lawful actions against jurisdictions that interfere with federal law enforcement.

Judge Orrick, in his order expanding the number of cities protected by the injunction, acknowledges his underlying ruling is currently under appeal. Additionally, some legal scholars suggest the injunction—due to its application outside the U.S. District Court Northern District of California—violates a recent Supreme Court ruling limiting injunctions to their originating jurisdiction and only allowing for broader orders in the case of class action lawsuits.

Notably, Orrick issued a similar ruling on defunding sanctuary cities during Trump’s first term.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has also taken legal action against cities with sanctuary policies. In June, the DOJ sued Los Angeles, claiming its policies barring city resources from aiding immigration enforcement violated federal law. A month later, the DOJ filed a similar suit against New York City.

Speaking with the press in the Oval Office—along with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung—Trump suggested the federal government will grant visas to 600,000 Chinese students. This would more than double the number of Chinese nationals that were allowed to study in the United States during the 2023/2024 academic year, which stood at an estimated 277,398.

“It’s a very important relationship; we’re going to get along good with China. I hear so many stories about [how] we’re not gonna allow their students. No, we’re gonna allow their students to come in,” President Trump said, to the bewilderment of many of his MAGA supporters.

He added: “We’re gonna allow it. It’s very important. 600,000 students. It’s very important.”


In late May, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the State Department would begin revoking visas for Chinese students studying at American universities. Almost immediately after the policy was announced, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared the decision was “discriminatory.”

In a video statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Mao Ning dismissed the mounting national security concerns posed by Chinese nationals at U.S. academic institutions, who have been tied to espionage and subversive activities in a number of cases.

Compounding the confusion around President Trump’s statement that the United States will now double the number of student visas held by Chinese nationals is the recent announcement that the administration will be undertaking a review of all 55 million visas held by foreigners, both inside and outside the country.

In addition, Secretary of State Rubio revealed that the State Department has revoked an estimated 6,000 student visas as of August 18.

London’s Streets Are Covered in Red Spit Stains, Here’s Why:

A string of viral videos emerging from Harrow, a district in northwest London, England, show unsightly red stains on public trash cans, sidewalks, and walls. They are believed to be caused by people spitting paan and gutkha, two chewing tobacco-like products widely consumed in South Asia, now becoming more prevalent in Britain as it becomes increasingly diverse.

Paan is a preparation made by wrapping areca nut, slaked lime, and various spices or sweeteners in a betel leaf, often chewed with tobacco. Gutkha is a commercial form of chewing tobacco mixed with similar ingredients, banned in several Indian states due to its harmful health effects.

Both substances are popular across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, but are associated with significant public health and sanitation concerns, particularly due to the red stains caused when users spit out the residue, which are expensive to clean.

Harrow’s municipal government is stressing both the health implications and the financial burden of cleaning up the mess. A council spokesman stated, “Our Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) prohibits spitting in public and fines of £100 ($135) are issued to anyone caught.” The council also reported that 33 such fines were issued in July 2025 alone.

The appearance of paan stores across various parts of the United Kingdom has raised alarms that such spitting incidents may become more frequent unless stricter regulation is enforced. Other English cities home to large South Asian populations, such as Leicester, have already put up signs in foreign languages like Gujarati, threatening hefty fines for spitting paan on the street.

The social media posts come at the same time as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner (Ambassador) to the United Kingdom, Abida Islam, is boasting that much of Britain’s capital city feels like being back in Bangladesh.

Notably, the incident is being investigated by the Maryland Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The patient’s immigration status is not yet known.

Despite the case of human infection, HHS is emphasizing that the direct threat posed to humans by the New World screwworm is minimal. “The risk to public health in the United States from this introduction is very low,” says HHS spokesman Andrew G. Nixon.

However, the parasite does pose a serious threat to the U.S. cattle industry, with bovines serving as a prime vector for the flesh-eating maggots. The National Pulse reported last week that the Trump administration is set to construct a $750 million factory in southern Texas to breed thousands of sterile flies in an effort to combat the New World screwworm.

While sterile fly swarms produced in Panama had kept the parasitic insect isolated to South America, it is believed that the mass surge of illegal immigrants northward during the former Biden government allowed the New World screwworm to breach the Panamanian countermeasures. This has resulted in infections being reported among livestock in Mexico, with significant concern that the parasites could devastate the U.S. beef industry as well.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects that an outbreak of the New World screwworm in Texas could cost the cattle industry $1.8 billion. A broader outbreak across the southern U.S. would be economically devastating.

The alleged MS-13 gang member was released from custody in Tennessee on Friday. The release followed the expiration of a judge’s 30-day pause on his case, which involves allegations of human trafficking and abuse.

U.S. District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw upheld Garcia’s release last month, ruling there was insufficient evidence to confirm his membership in the MS-13 gang. However, two other judges had previously accepted evidence that Garcia was indeed a member of the violent criminal organization.

Earlier this year, Garcia was deported to El Salvador as part of a group of gang members, but was later extradited back to the U.S. to face criminal charges.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes in Tennessee had ordered his release from a jail near Nashville, where he had been held since June after returning from El Salvador.

“Today, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is free,” his attorney, Sean Hecker, said. Abrego Garcia had been deported to El Salvador earlier this year after being identified as a member of MS-13 by the Trump administration. Hecker claimed that the deportation and subsequent imprisonment were part of a “vindictive attack” and praised the courts for providing “meaningful due process.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, however, have indicated that they plan to re-arrest Abrego Garcia and begin deportation proceedings once he is no longer in the custody of the U.S. Marshals. The case has drawn significant political and media attention, including sympathetic support from U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and other Democratic members of Congress, as well as misleading stories from The Atlantic and POLITICO, which described the illegal immigrant as a “Maryland father.”

Abrego Garcia was initially returned to the U.S. from El Salvador on human trafficking charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop. He was later detained in Tennessee after being indicted on human smuggling charges. His lawyers hired a firm with court-approved pre-trial transportation experience to bring him back to Maryland after his release.

Secretary Rubio has also announced additional measures, including a halt on worker visas for foreign commercial truck drivers, citing concerns over road safety and the impact on American truckers. “Effective immediately we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers,” Rubio wrote on X, adding that the move was necessary to protect American lives and livelihoods.

This follows the killing of three people by an illegal immigrant truck driver in Florida.

The United Kingdom is heading for a turbulent weekend, with demonstrations against mass migration set in numerous cities, including Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Leeds, and Perth. Anti-mass migration demonstrators and far-left pro-migration activists are expected to face off over the government’s ongoing use of taxpayer-funded hotels to house poorly vetted asylum seekers,  putting public safety at risk.

The wave of protests stems from a High Court injunction halting the use of a hotel in Epping Forest, England, to house migrants, which had also attracted protests after residents were accused of sexually assaulting local children. Further legal challenges against migrant hotels are now expected elsewhere in the country, as the government mounts its own legal efforts to overturn the Epping ruling.

The number of asylum seekers housed in hotels is estimated at over 32,000, an increase of eight percent during Labour Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s first year in office. “New figures out today show record numbers claiming asylum under Labour. Our streets are becoming more dangerous, yet this disaster only gets worse,” commented Reform Party leader Nigel Farage, adding: “The public are right to be very angry with this government.”

Notably, the protests are expected to coincide with London’s Notting Hill Carnival, a massive annual cultural event drawing over a million attendees. While championed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan and other diversity advocates, the Afro-Caribbean carnival always places significant pressure on police force. Last year’s carnival was marked by serious safety concerns: ten people were stabbed, two of them fatally, with police making at least 349 arrests during the event for offences ranging from drug possession to assaults on emergency workers. Sixty-one police officers were also assaulted.

The combined polcing demands of the protests, counter-protests, and carnival are raising concerns that law enforcement may struggle to maintain order this weekend.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Thursday that foreign worker visas for commercial drivers would be paused “effective immediately.” The move follows a deadly incident where an illegal immigrant truck driver engaged in an unlawful U-turn, causing a crash that killed three people in Florida. Rubio cited public safety concerns as the primary reason for the decision.

“The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” the Secretary of State wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Thursday.

The fatal crash involved Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant driving a commercial truck with a trailer on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce. Authorities say Singh attempted a U-turn in an unauthorized area, causing the trailer to jackknife and collide with a minivan, killing all three passengers inside. Investigations revealed that Singh had not passed English or road tests before obtaining a commercial driver’s license, answering only two of 12 questions correctly in an English Language Proficiency test, and misidentifying three of four road traffic signs.

Singh was granted a full-term commercial driver’s license in Washington in July 2023, despite not being legally eligible. He also held a limited-term commercial driver’s license in California in 2024.

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials have since engaged in a dispute over Singh’s licensing, with Newsom’s office falsely claiming Singh obtained a work permit during President Donald J. Trump‘s first term. However, DHS has clarified that Singh was denied in September 2020 under Trump but granted a permit in June 2021 under the Biden government.

“Three innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom’s California Department of Motor Vehicles issued an illegal alien a Commercial Driver’s License—this state of governance is asinine,” commented DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, adding: “How many more innocent people must die before Gavin Newsom stops playing games with the safety of the American public?

Singh has been extradited to Florida from California and faces three counts of vehicular homicide.

President Donald J. Trump has finalized a significant new immigration agreement with Uganda, allowing the United States to deport certain illegal aliens to the East African nation. Under this arrangement, third-country nationals who are denied asylum in the U.S. but cannot be easily returned to their countries of origin can be resettled in Uganda instead.

Uganda currently accommodates nearly two million refugees, mainly from neighboring conflict zones such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its government has described the deal with the U.S. as “a temporary arrangement with conditions, including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted,” per Foreign Affairs Ministry official Vincent Bagiire Waiswa.

Comparable arrangements have already been made with countries like Honduras, Paraguay, and Rwanda. Panama and Costa Rica have also joined similar efforts, accepting migrants from Africa and Asia. Several highly violent migrants have already been deported to the small African kingdom of Swaziland, or Eswatini, pending final removal to their countries of origin. President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has also made a deal with the U.S. to host criminal migrants at his CECOT super-prison.

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal government’s authority to deport migrants to third countries without requiring hearings about potential risks they may face upon relocation.

Since President Trump began his second term, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has seen a sharp rise in enforcement actions. ICE arrests have doubled, and for several months running, deportations have topped 10,000 per month.
