Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has strongly condemned a deadly bombing that took place in the southern city of Marawi on Sunday, attributing the violence to “foreign terrorists” in a post on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the incident. Islamic State terrorists claimed responsibility for the attack which killed four and injured over 50.
Marawi City had previously been the site of a five-month conflict between government forces and Islamist militants in 2017. President Marcos deemed those responsible “enemies to our society.”
Security measures have been heightened in response to the explosion, particularly in the south and around the nation’s capital, Manila. According to Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, the pursuit of the perpetrators will “continue unabated.”
Amid the continued investigations, classes at the Mindanao State University have been suspended until further notice. Security at ports and police checkpoints has been bolstered to counter any potential subsequent incidents.
