The battle over $500 million in Planned Parenthood federal funding just got weird. About a dozen supporters of the abortion giant showed up to protest Carly Fiorina at a tailgate rally in Iowa. Once there, they donned birth control costumes and started passing out condoms, which were soon thrown at the presidential hopeful.
In response to one of the protesters asking how “as a woman” she can oppose Planned Parenthood, Fiorina challenged her to watch the undercover Planned Parenthood videos that set off the controversy:
“Oh, I support women’s health care,” Fiorina responded. “I don’t support the butchering of babies, and you ought to go look at those videos.”
“I understand we may disagree on things, but you need to ask yourself some questions. Why is it that fetuses are aborted alive to butcher their brains? Why,” Fiorina asked Shireman, who identified herself as a Planned Parenthood supporter at the beginning of their conversation. “How much money does Planned Parenthood give to Democratic candidates? This is a big political rigged game.”
Fiorina also said the protest is a sign that the new conservative offensive on Planned Parenthood is having an impact:
“I think we’re making a difference, that’s my reaction,” Fiorina told reporters of the protesters. “I think they’re scared that the people of America are starting to look at what’s really going on in a Planned Parenthood clinic.”
I have to agree with Fiorina: When your political opponents are reduced to throwing condoms at you, you can be pretty sure you’ve struck a nerve.
