A new survey pushed by the Brennan Center for Justice—a Democrat-aligned dark-money lawfare group—claims that nearly one in 10 Americans cannot quickly access proof of citizenship. The National Pulse analyzed the data—intended to undermine voter I.D. requirements and other measures to prevent noncitizens from voting—and found that it is far less startling when the population sample used for the survey is examined.
The Brennan Center for Justice—along with VoteRiders, Public Wise, and the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement (CDCE) at the University of Maryland—partnered with the survey firm SSRS to determine what segment of the U.S. population lacks access to government-issued I.D.
However, SSRS acknowledges their survey includes “…oversamples of 18-24-year-olds, Black respondents, Hispanic respondents, Black and Hispanic 18-24-year olds, and individuals with income less than $30,000 per year.”
These demographics are most likely to lack a government-issued form of identification, meaning that even with juiced numbers, the SSRS survey could only find “nearly one in 10” U.S. citizens who lack identification. Another concern with the survey sampling is its over-reliance on pre-paid cell phone contacts, again likely resulting in further oversampling of demographics that lack identification documents.
Despite the glaring issues with the survey’s methodology, the far-left Guardian newspaper cites the data in a story arguing that Republican efforts to strengthen voter I.D. laws and ensure noncitizens are not voting in state and federal elections “could disenfranchise millions.” The far-left newspaper claims that former President Donald J. Trump and Republican lawmakers “have exaggerated the threat of [noncitizen] voting—which is already illegal and rare—and have pushed for federal legislation that would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.”
In actuality, access to government-issued identification has become increasingly easier for American citizens in recent years. Additionally, The National Pulse has reported extensively on the very real issue of noncitizen voters—documenting numerous instances where ineligible immigrants have either received voter registration forms or voted in state and federal elections.
