Gay Africans Are Blaming Trump for Their HIV.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Gay men in African nations have blamed difficulties accessing HIV prevention medication on foreign aid cuts enacted by the Trump administration, rather than African governments or their own behavior.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: President Donald J. Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Russell Vought, public health officials, gay Africans, and African governments.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Since President Trump’s inauguration, with impacts felt in countries like Nigeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia.

💬KEY QUOTE: “I equally blame the Trump administration because, you know, these things were available, and then, without prior notice, these things were cut off.” – Emmanuel Cherem, Nigerian citizen.

🎯IMPACT: If gay African men are unwilling to change their behavior, African governments, the African Union, and liberal governments in the European Union (EU), Canada, and elsewhere might have to step up to fund the medication, instead of relying on American taxpayers.

IN FULL

Gay men in African nations are claiming increased HIV diagnoses due to the Trump administration’s decision to cut foreign aid funding, particularly for HIV/AIDS prevention programs, rather than their own risky sexual behavior. The cuts have allegedly limited access to medications such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which reduces the risk of contracting HIV by 99 percent, though it remains unclear why African countries or the African Union have not funded the drug themselves.

Emmanuel Cherem, a 25-year-old from Nigeria, an oil-rich state and one of Africa’s largest economies, stated that he tested positive for HIV two months after losing access to the drug. “I blame myself [but] I equally blame the Trump administration because, you know, these things were available, and then, without prior notice, these things were cut off.” He did not explain why American taxpayers should have a particular responsibility to stop him from catching HIV.

The Trump administration paused foreign development assistance on the President’s first day in office, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio issuing a “stop work order” for the State Department’s Office of Foreign Assistance. Programs like the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) saw significant funding reductions, with prevention efforts now focused on pregnant and lactating women who may pass HIV to their children. LGBT individuals unwilling to take precautions and prostitutes are no longer a main focus.

During a visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Donald J. Trump defended the cuts, stating, “Hopefully a lot of people are going to start spending a lot of money. I’ve talked to other nations. We want them to chip in and spend money too, and we’ve spent a lot. And it’s a big—it’s a tremendous problem going on in many countries.”

Public health officials, including Linda-Gail Bekker of the University of Cape Town, have expressed concerns that African nations may not be able to fill the funding gap, potentially leading to increased HIV transmission rates. UNAIDS has noted that countries like Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique were heavily reliant on U.S. funding for HIV prevention measures—though all fall under the umbrella of the African Union, and it is unclear why other relatively wealthy nations in Europe, the Middle East, and elsewhere could not fund the measures instead of America.

Doctors Help HIV-Positive Trans Dude ‘Breastfeed’ Infant.

A transgender biological man with HIV is “breastfeeding” his infant despite the risk of transmission, and Canadian doctors are helping him do it.

Back up: Murray Pearson, 52, who identifies as a woman and goes by the name Margie Fancypants on social media, began “transitioning” in 2022, including taking drugs to grow breasts that can lactate.

The horrifying details: Pearson began posting to a Reddit forum for transgenders several months ago, detailing his journey to “connect through feeding” his 9-month-only baby.
  • He explained that he was working with two endocrinologists who created a drug protocol to induce lactation artificially.
HIV positive: Pearson admitted that he is HIV positive and acknowledges that transmission to his infant via milk “IS possible if viral load becomes detectable.”
  • Viral load refers to the amount of HIV in the blood at a given time.
  • He says he plans to test his viral load monthly to mitigate the risk.

Time out… “Mitigate risk”? How about eliminating the risk of giving your infant HIV by not exposing them to the risk at all? This whole story is giving late stage Republic vibes.

One of Pearson’s doctors, Dr. Marina Klein, gave a comment to Reduxx, saying: “It’s important to emphasize that we do not recommend breastfeeding for people with HIV… [however] If, after informed discussion, a person expresses a wish to breastfeed they may choose to do so provided they are willing to follow a close protocol of viral monitoring.”

Pray for that baby.

A Queer Mexican Playwright is Refusing to Take His HIV Meds Until a Small New York Theatre Backs Hamas.

Victor I. Cazares, a queer and HIV-positive playwright, is refusing to take his antiviral medication until the New York Theatre Workshop declares its support for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war that continues to rage in Gaza. He says he hopes his physical decline and suffering will move the small theater to action. The ‘drama’ around the queer Mexican playwright’s protest has played out in a series of Instagram posts.

“Maybe they don’t feel much for Palestinians. They can’t imagine,” Cazares said in a recent interview, adding: “But they’ve spoken to me. They can visualize my life. They’ve seen me be among them. What I’m hoping is that my life means something.” Cazares has not taken a dose of Dovato — an antiviral medication that has had an over 90 percent success rate in reducing HIV to undetectable levels in patients — since December 1, 2023. After 41 days of foregoing the antiviral medication, the playwright’s HIV levels were no longer undetectable — meaning the virus had established itself in his body.

Friends and family of Cazares have objected to his protest — ostensibly in support of the Hamas terrorist group that governs the Palestinian Gaza territory. His sister-in-law objected to his actions, telling him, “No one’s asking you to do this, Victor. We need you here.” Friends have tried to reason with him, asking: “Why are you risking your life for a white institution that is never going to care about your life?” In response, Cazares claims he’s given his life to theater and is willing to take his protest to a hospital bed if necessary. He believes the New York Theater Workshop will eventually fold to his medication-strike.

When untreated, HIV eventually will develop into the immunodeficiency condition called AIDS. At this point, there is no effective treatment for the patient, with AIDS always being fatal.

New AIDS Memorial Sculpture is Butt(hole) of Local Jokes.

A new AIDS memorial in Palm Springs, California is stirring controversy, due to its similarity to an orifice which is often people’s first point of contact with the disease.

From one side, the $500,000 memorial looks like a generic, donut-like modernist sculpture engraved with a swirling pattern – but from the other side it resembles an anus.

“The backside of the proposed memorial looks like a graphic depiction of the backside of a human being,” said local activist Gene Brake.

“That’s definitely a butthole,” remarked one social media user.

While HIV and AIDS can be contracted through vaginal sex and needle-sharing, they are most commonly contracted through male-on-male anal sex, with gay and bisexual men accounting for a grossly disproportionate share of the infected.

The lifetime risk of contracting HIV for gay men is one in six, rising to one in four among gay Latino men and an astonishing one in two among gay black men, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

AIDSurrection! Protesters Storm Speaker’s Office at U.S. Capitol.

Demonstrators demanding that Congress reauthorizes the President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) – an international HIV/AIDS relief program – stormed the office of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Monday. Six of the activists who entered and then occupied the Speaker’s office were arrested by the Capitol Police. Their hands were bound with zip ties instead of handcuffs, a common practice used for mass arrests during political protests where the arrested individuals are booked on minor charges and promptly released.

Conservative commentator Byron York pointed out on X (formerly Twitter) that the six arrested protestors could be charged, albeit unlikely, with several serious crimes including “1) Disorderly and Disruptive Conduct in a Restricted Building or Grounds; 2) Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building; 3) Impeding Passage Through the Capitol Grounds or Buildings; 4) Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building…”.

The punishment for the charges vary, though each carries a maximum 6 months to a year in prison.

Protestors who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 have been handed sentences far in excess of those usually handed down for unlawful behavior in government buildings. Over 1,000 of the protestors present that day have been arrested, nearly 500 have received sentences, and 277 have been given prison time. The prison sentences have ranged from as little as 3 years to upwards of 20 years or more.

How D.C. Media Works: POLITICO Peddles HIV Narrative, Sponsored by HIV Drug Firm Gilead.

The foreign-owned D.C. insider publication POLITICO has claimed that people charged with recklessly transmitting HIV are victims of “stigma.” But their recent, lengthy report was sponsored by Gilead, a pharmaceutical corporation that directly profits from the sale of HIV drugs.

This form of thinly veiled “advertorial” has become commonplace in corporate media, especially amongst D.C.-centric “news” outlets that often serve more as a form of lobbying for tech firms as well as Big Pharma.

The “in focus” report honed in on the personal stories of people like “James,” an African migrant charged in England for transmitting HIV not intentionally but recklessly – that is, by not telling a partner you are infected and failing to take precautions such as wearing a condom, exposing them to risk. POLITICO stressed how “warm and friendly” James was, and how being charged with reckless transmission was “terrifying” and “upended his life”, emphasizing the point by playing sad piano music under the audio.

The news outlet did not, however, speak to anyone who contracted HIV after a partner declined to inform them of their status, nor consider the impact of infection on their lives. The outlet – sold to German giant Axel Springer in 2021 – also downplayed the seriousness of HIV, citing activists who insist HIV isn’t “dirty,” nor “a disease to be ashamed of,” and still less “a death sentence.”

Which is where their sponsor, Gilead along with its commercial drugs, comes in.

“[T]here’s a lot of people that live really long, healthy, happy lives with HIV, and actually find it incredibly stigmatizing to see media reports and to see quotes from the police… saying that someone’s life has been destroyed by an HIV diagnosis, because that’s just not how a lot of people, or the vast majority of people, feel,” one anonymized interviewee claimed.

POLITICO’s subjects largely agreed that intentionally infecting someone with HIV should still be prosecuted, but there is pushback against even that in some left-run jurisdictions. California, for example, downgraded deliberate infection from a felony to a misdemeanor in 2018, and fully decriminalized knowingly donating HIV-infected blood.
