Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has revealed more than 600,000 “gotaways” – migrants who evade the authorities after illegally entering the United States – were recorded at the southern border in fiscal year 2023.
Mayorkas was responding to an inquiry launched by Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, with the Secretary admitting the “phenomenon of gotaways has been a challenge for the Department of Homeland Security for decades.”
“In fact, it is a powerful example of a broken immigration system,” Mayorkas conceded.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) registered a record 2.4 million migrants in fiscal 2023, with September seeing the highest recorded monthly figure at over 269,000. Additionally, a record number of individuals on the terror watch list were detected at the southern border.
Over ten million illegal migrants have crossed the southern border under the Biden regime, once the total number of gotaways is included, representing the largest amount in U.S. history.
More than 900,000 migrants were released by the CBP just this year.

The House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary and its Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement have produced new data showing the Joe Biden regime has “failed to remove, through immigration court removal proceedings, over 99 percent of those illegal aliens who have been released into the country” since the elderly Democrat took office.
“Of the more than 5 million illegal alien encounters from January 20, 2021, through March 31, 2023, at least 2,464,424 illegal aliens had no confirmed departure from the United States as of March 31, 2023,” the committees, headed by Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Tom McClintock, record in their latest interim staff report.
“Of the illegal aliens encountered in those 26 months, [the Department of Homeland Security] released at least 2,148,738 illegal aliens into the United States,” the report adds.
The committees found only a tiny fraction of asylum seekers released into the country – six percent – had even been screened for a reasonable fear of persecution in their supposed homelands.
“This data contradict[s] [Homeland Security] Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas’ statements that the southwest border is closed and that illegal aliens are ‘quickly’ removed,” the report warns.
“Instead, with more than 99 percent of illegal aliens staying inside the United States after being released by the Biden Administration, there is virtually no enforcement of our immigration laws.”

The U.S. border was overrun by 11,000 illegal immigrants over the past 24 hours according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The surge in crossings over the last day is the highest in recent memory.
BREAKING: CBP sources tell FOX News.. There were approximately 11,000 migrant encounters at the SW border in the last 24 hours marking the “single highest day in recent memory.”
In Eagle Pass alone, there were more than 4000 from Fri-Sun/weekend @FoxNews
Late last Friday, the CBP announced that 7.6 million illegal immigrants have entered the country since President Biden took office in January of 2021. Nearly 20 million illegals now reside in the U.S., costing taxpayers $150.6 billion per year – a $35 billion increase from 2017’s $116 billion estimate.
The surge in border crossings continues, unabated, despite the Biden White House insisting the their immigration plan is working and stymieing the flow of illegal immigrants. Biden has declared the U.S. southern border is “safe, orderly, and humane.” Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security, has repeatedly insisted “the border is secure” when confronted by Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has avoided questions about the record breaking number of illegal aliens cross the U.S. southern border.
The National Pulse has previously reported an estimated 100,000 illegal immigrants are released into the U.S. every month by Biden’s Department of Homeland Security. Andrew Arthur, a former U.S. immigration judge, believes the Biden government has withheld important data from the American people in an effort “to hide the fact that it is releasing more than 100,000 aliens per month.” Given the recent spike in illegal crossings, however, the number of illegals released may be much higher.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani left the 9/11 memorial ceremony early on Monday, protesting the presence of Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. Giuliani is credited with his steadfast leadership of the city during the deadly and horrific terrorist attacks 22 years ago.
In an interview with Newsmax host Greg Kelly, Giuliani expressed his concerns about the current state of national security, saying that he believes the country is in more danger under President Joe Biden’s government than it was before 9/11.
Giuliani specifically criticized Harris and Mayorkas, citing the unchecked flow of undocumented immigrants crossing the border without the government having proper knowledge of their identities. He also condemned Harris for comparing the January 6 Capitol riots to the 9/11 attacks and the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which he described as an “unbelievable insult” to the victims of these tragedies.
Giuliani, who was mayor of New York City during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, expressed his frustration with the Democrats’ characterization of the Capitol riots and highlighted the significant loss of life and ongoing health consequences resulting from the horrific attacks on 9/11. He disputed the claim that the Capitol riots were an insurrection and emphasized that no one has been convicted of such a charge.

Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security John Tien quietly resigned this week, in an unexpected move buried in the news cycle under the Trump indictment and missing submersible. Tien follows Customs and Border Protection chief Chris Magnus, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) acting chief Tae Johnson, and US Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, all of whom bowed out in recent months.
Officially, Tien says he wants to spend more time with his family. It’s a euphemistic rationale, especially as just weeks ago he was giving interviews about his “new challenge” in the job, claiming he has “a responsibility to be both seen and heard.”
But like Magnus, Johnson and Ortiz, he is unlikely to be seen or heard from again, at least in this government.
Speculation will necessarily abound, but Biden’s border has arguably been the most colossal failure of his three years in office thus far, and there’s plenty to pick from.
Moves to prevent an embarrassing surge in border crossings ahead of an election year may be informing the departures. After all, Tien recently refused to confirm that he believes crossing the border illegally should even be a crime.
Magnus, meanwhile, resigned in November amidst pressure to reduce crossings – instructions contrary to his belief in sanctuary cities and states, and a distraction from his priorities of increasing female recruitment and clamping down on agents’ social media posts.
Ortiz, at Border Patrol, is said to have sought retirement, having only landed the gig in 2021, after 32 years of service.
“After a 32-year Border Patrol career spanning multiple Sectors, HQ tours, and overseas assignments in Afghanistan, I have decided to retire from federal service on June 30th,” he said in May.
Illegal crossings have been at (or near) record highs for much of 2022 and 2023. It was widely expected, including by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, that this situation would dramatically worsen with the expiration of Trump-era Title 42 border controls in May.
Hastily reinforced Title 8 controls criminalizing illegal entry have so far prevented the worst of the catastrophe, but migrants presenting themselves at points of entry have hit an all-time high as a side-effect.
Jack Montgomery contributed to this report.
