IN FULL

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, after a five-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, revealed that the Russian leader will soon announce a “very good proposal” for ending the war in Ukraine. The proposal, according to Lukashenko, has already been shared with former U.S. President Donald J. Trump during a summit in Alaska last month.

Lukashenko refrained from detailing the contents of the proposal, stating, “President Putin and I discussed it, but I won’t talk about it. The President himself will say.” He described the proposal as favorable for Ukraine, adding, “If the Ukrainians don’t accept these proposals, it will be like it was at the beginning of the special military operation. It will be even worse; they will lose Ukraine.”

Russia’s demands in the past have included territorial concessions from Ukraine, renunciation of NATO membership ambitions, and limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces—conditions Kiev has consistently rejected. Lukashenko suggested that he, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should meet to negotiate, though Russia insists such a meeting would require Zelensky to travel to Moscow.

In contrast, Trump recently stated that Ukraine could potentially regain all its lost territory due to Russia’s economic struggles, marking a shift in his stance. The Kremlin dismissed these comments, attributing them to Trump’s recent meeting with Zelensky. Lukashenko emphasized that Zelensky must negotiate and agree to the terms supported by the U.S. to avoid further losses.

Lukashenko faces Western sanctions over his support for Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, Trump has recently reached out to him, describing him as a “highly respected” leader and facilitating discussions that led to the release of over 50 political prisoners in Belarus.

IN FULL

President Donald J. Trump shared on Truth Social that he spoke with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko about prisoner releases ahead of his Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday afternoon. “I had a wonderful talk with the highly respected President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko. The purpose of the call was to thank him for the release of 16 prisoners. We are also discussing the release of 1,300 additional prisoners,” Trump stated.

He related that the conversation “was a very good one,” and that he and Lukashenko “discussed many topics, including President Putin’s visit to Alaska.” He added, “I look forward to meeting President Lukashenko in the future. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Russia and Belarus are close allies, joined together in a Union State involving deep economic and military ties, although each remains sovereign. Belarus has not participated directly in the Ukraine war, but it has allowed Russian forces to operate from its territory, with the 2022 offensive towards Kiev being launched largely across the Belarusian border.

President Lukashenko pardoned the 16 prisoners, many of whom were charged with extremism—a common charge used against political dissidents in Belarus—last month. Over 1,000 political prisoners are believed to remain detained in the country.

In June, Belarusian political figure Siarhei Tsikhanouski and 13 others were freed and transported to Lithuania, a NATO and European Union (EU) member on the Baltic coast, after a meeting between Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, and Lukashenko.

U.S. Orders Americans in Belarus to ‘Depart Immediately’.

The U.S. Embassy in Belarus has urged all U.S. citizens in the country to “depart immediately” – and not to go to neighboring Russia or Ukraine.

Americans who may have been planning to travel to Belarus are instructed not to do so, “due to Belarusian authorities’ continued facilitation of Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine, the buildup of Russian military forces in Belarus, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential of civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus.”

Led by Aleksandr Lukashenko, Belarus is officially not a party the war in Ukraine – but it was used as a staging ground by Russian forces during the early stages of the invasion, and now hosts Wagner Group mercenaries who departed Russia following an abortive march on Moscow.

It has been targeted by Western sanctions along with Russia, and Vladimir Putin moved nuclear weapons into the country in June. Lukashenko vowed to use these weapons in the event of foreign “aggression” last week.
