PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: Kansas Republicans overrode Democrat Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of a bill requiring the use of restrooms based on biological sex rather than self-proclaimed gender identity.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Kansas Senate and House Republicans, Governor Laura Kelly, Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson (R), and state Representative Abi Boatman (D).

📍WHEN & WHERE: The Kansas Senate voted on Tuesday, and the House voted on Wednesday to override the veto during the 2026 legislative session.

💬KEY QUOTE: “Kansas Democrats are for They/Them. I will continue to fight for you, and protect women and girls across our state.” – Ty Masterson

🎯IMPACT: The bill, now law, mandates government buildings, including schools and universities, separate facilities by biological sex, with penalties for violations.

IN FULL

Republican lawmakers in Kansas have overridden Democratic Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of Senate Bill 244, enacting a requirement that individuals use restrooms in government buildings according to their biological sex rather than gender identity. The measure cleared the Kansas Senate in a 31–9 vote and passed the Kansas House of Representatives 87–37, achieving the two-thirds majority needed to nullify the veto.

The statute applies to public facilities statewide, including schools and universities. Violations can carry a $1,000 fine, with potential criminal penalties for repeat offenses. Exceptions allow parents or guardians to accompany children under nine into opposite-sex restrooms and permit coaches to enter locker rooms as long as occupants remain clothed.

Senate President Ty Masterson hailed the override as having “restored sanity,” criticizing Kelly’s veto, which he said “would have forced our mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters to share their bathrooms with biological men in government buildings.” He added, “Kansas Democrats are for They/Them. I will continue to fight for you, and protect women and girls across our state.”

Governor Kelly argued in her veto message that the bill was “poorly drafted” and warned of “numerous and significant consequences.” She suggested it could create confusion in situations such as fathers accompanying daughters at public events or siblings visiting one another in dormitories. Republican lawmakers, including State Sen. Kellie Warren and State Rep. Susan Humphries, dismissed those claims as “red herrings.”

Kansas Republicans have previously overridden Kelly’s vetoes, including a 2025 law restricting certain gender-transition medications for minors that remains under court review.

WATCH: Trans Activists Hold Dance Party in Capitol Hill Women’s Bathroom.

A group of transgender and LGBTQ activists are protesting House Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision that men only use men’s bathrooms and women use women’s in House Capitol and office buildings. Earlier this week, trans activists held an impromptu dance party in a women’s bathroom at the Capitol, contravening Johnson’s ruling.

In a video posted to social media, numerous individuals can be seen dancing and parading around the women’s bathroom—with some clearly being men and others transgender, plus a handful of possibly genuinely female “allies.”

In November, Speaker Johnson announced he would implement a new rule that those using bathrooms in House-controlled premises can only enter facilities corresponding to their biological sex. The move was prompted by legislation introduced by Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC), which initially sought to ban men from using women’s bathrooms and vice versa on Capitol Hill. This was later substituted for a bill implementing such a ban on all federal property.

The legislation, introduced by Mace, has drawn violent threats from members of the transgender community. The National Pulse previously reported that transgender activist ‘Venus Andromeda’ posted a series of crazed vidoes against Mace, fantasizing about attacking the lawmaker in a women’s bathroom and beating her to death.

WATCH: Nancy Mace Clashes with Trans Activist.

South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace responded to a protest by a transgender activist following an incident at a tech conference in Washington, D.C., as she is campaigning to ban transgenders from women’s bathrooms. Evan Greer, director of Fight for Freedom, interrupted Mace during her appearance at the “Summit on the Future of the Internet” held at Georgetown University.

The protest was in opposition to Mace’s proposed legislation, which prevents transgender women from accessing women’s facilities on Capitol Hill. During the interruption, Greer accused Mace of spreading misinformation that contributes to violence against transgenders, citing the deaths of several transgenders this year. Greer was removed by security.

Mace later shared video footage of the incident on social media. She reiterated her belief in restricting transgender women from using female-only spaces, saying of Greer: “God loves him, I love him—but his penis isn’t gonna be in my bathroom.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently affirmed that facilities in the Capitol complex are designated solely for use by individuals of the corresponding biological sex. He noted that private restrooms and unisex facilities are available.

Mace’s proposed ban on men in women’s facilities, the Protecting Women’s Private Spaces Act, has outraged gender ideologues. Trans activist “Venus Andromeda” threatened to kill the Republican congresswoman, posting an image on Instagram with the text “prepare to die” and fantasizing about beating her to death in a women’s restroom.

WEIRD: AOC Really Wants Dudes in Her Bathroom.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is publicly defending Delaware Democrat Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender person elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, while criticizing a GOP-backed effort to restrict bathroom use in Congress and on federal property to the users corresponding biological sex.

The proposal, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), aims to prohibit transgenders from using restrooms that do not align with their biological sex on federal property. Ocasio-Cortez condemned the proposed restrictions in an interview on Wednesday.

The New York Democrat argued that the measures lack a practical means of enforcement and would create situations where women and girls could face invasive scrutiny over their gender identity. She accused Mace and her Republican colleagues of using the issue to fundraise rather than protect individuals, urging House members to reject the measure.

“It’s disgusting and everybody, no matter how you feel on this issue, should reject it completely,” she said. “What are they doing? They’re doing this so that Nancy Mace can make a buck and send a text and fundraise off of an email.”

“They’re not doing this to protect people; they’re endangering women, they’re endangering girls of all kinds, and everybody should reject it,” Ocasio-Cortez concluded.

Mace dismissed Ocasio-Cortez’s comments, rejecting the spurious claims that the proposal endangers women.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson has announced single-sex facilities in House office buildings and the Capitol will be restricted to those of the appropriate biological sex. McBride says he will abide by this determination.
