Board Member at ‘Impartial’ BBC Branded Trump a ‘Howling Idiot.’

PULSE POINTS

âť“WHAT HAPPENED: A BBC board member, Muriel Gray, described President Donald J. Trump as a “howling idiot” in social media posts before her appointment.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Muriel Gray, President Donald J. Trump, BBC board members, and other political figures.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Posts made prior to Gray’s appointment in January 2022; the BBC has been under scrutiny in recent days over manipulative coverage of President Trump.

💬KEY QUOTE: Muriel Gray described President Trump as “just a howling idiot shouting into the abyss.”

🎯IMPACT: The remarks have drawn further attention to political bias on the BBC board following its handling of a scandal involved a doctored Trump speech.

IN FULL

Muriel Gray, a member of the BBC Board and a former television presenter, is facing scrutiny over a series of social media posts she made about President Donald J. Trump before joining the corporation’s governing body in January 2022. In one message posted after Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, Gray described Trump as “just a howling idiot shouting into the abyss.” Other posts from the same period referred to him as “useless” and included remarks mocking then–First Lady Melania Trump. Gray has not commented publicly since the resurfacing of the messages.

The de facto state broadcaster, funded by a compulsory television license fee, is under intense scrutiny after it emerged that an edited version of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech, aired in a BBC Panorama programme, stitched together lines from different parts of the address in a way that gave the impression he urged supporters toward violence.

A whistleblower revealed that the clip had been manipulated, sparking a series of reports on BBC bias. Because televsion owners are forced to fund the broadcaster, it is required to be impartial and nonpartisan—although it is widely believed to suffer systemic left-wing bias, with successive governments doing little to rein it in.

The BBC has apologised for the doctored clip, and its India-born chairman, Samir Shah, issued a personal apology to the White House as Trump announced plans to pursue legal action, accusing the corporation of defamation. However, a second doctored Trump clip has since surfaced, intensifying criticism of the broadcaster’s editorial processes.

The fallout has been sweeping. Director General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness have both resigned, acknowledging the serious damage caused by the incident. Left-wing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s government has signalled that political appointments to the board may be reviewed as part of an upcoming charter renewal.

A BBC spokesman said all board members are bound by the organization’s governance rules and emphasised that the corporation is committed to addressing the failures that led to the misleading Panorama broadcast.

BBC: Wanting to Stop Boats Filled With Illegal Migrants Is Racist.

PULSE POINTS

âť“WHAT HAPPENED: The BBC faced backlash after a post accusing the “Stop the Boats” campaign against illegal immigration of being racist was published on their live coverage of an England vs Andorra football (soccer) match.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: The BBC, Refom Party lawmaker Lee Anderson, Defund the BBC Campaign Director Rebecca Ryan, England football fans, and social media users.

📍WHEN & WHERE: During England’s 2-0 victory over Andorra at Villa Park in Birmingham.

đź’¬KEY QUOTE: “The BBC need to stick to the day job rather than trying to stoke up more division.” – Lee Anderson

🎯IMPACT: The incident sparked criticism of the BBC for failing to meet its legal requirements to remain impartial, and renewed calls to defund the state broadcaster.

IN FULL

The BBC is facing renewed backlash after a controversial post accusing the anti-illegal immigration “Stop the Boats” campaign of racism was published during live coverage of England‘s 2-0 soccer victory over Andorra. The live update, titled ‘No sign of racist post,’ stated, “Thankfully there’s no sign of the ‘Stop The Boats’ flags that were being offered to supporters outside. Having a scan round the stadium now, I can’t see any.”

A BBC spokesman claimed the post was a draft “accidentally published” before going through editorial checks. “It was identified and removed immediately,” the spokesman said. However, critics say it is a sign of the public broadcaster’s institutional bias. Notably, the public broadcaster is funded through a compulsory license fee enforced through criminal fines backed by the threat of imprisonment, and therefore legally required to be politically impartial.

“The BBC need to stick to the day job rather than trying to stoke up more division,” said Lee Anderson, a Member of Parliament (MP) and Chief Whip for Nigel Farage’s Reform Party.

Rebecca Ryan, Director of Defund the BBC, defended the public’s right to oppose illegal immigration without being branded racist. “Wanting secure borders and fairness for taxpayers has nothing to do with skin color, it’s about law, order, and common sense,” she said.

Earlier this year, the broadcaster was found to have breached its own editorial guidelines more than 1,500 times in just a few weeks of coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. In July, a BBC documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone was pulled after it was revealed that the main interviewee, a 13-year-old boy, was the son of a senior Hamas official, a fact omitted from the film.

Hostility to conservative viewpoints is deeply entrenched in soccer, with Rangers Football Club being charged with racism by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) in March after fans displayed a banner during a Europa League match that read, “Keep woke foreign ideologies out—defend Europe.” Officials who branded this “racist and discriminatory.”

Streaming Overtakes Traditional TV.

PULSE POINTS

âť“WHAT HAPPENED: Streaming has surpassed the combined share of broadcast and cable TV viewing for the first time, according to Nielsen’s latest report.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Nielsen, streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix, and more traditional media companies like Disney and NBCUniversal.

📍WHEN & WHERE: The milestone was recorded in May 2023, as documented in Nielsen’s The Gauge monthly report.

đź’¬KEY QUOTE: “While many have expected this milestone to occur sooner, sporting events, news, and new season content have kept broadcast and cable surprisingly resilient.” – Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen SVP.

🎯IMPACT: Streaming platforms now lead TV viewership, reshaping the media landscape and forcing traditional companies to adapt to consumer preferences.

IN FULL

For the first time, streaming has outpaced the combined share of broadcast and cable TV viewing, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge monthly report. Streaming accounted for 44.8 percent of total TV viewership in May 2023, while broadcast and cable combined for 44.2 percent. This marks the largest share for streaming to date.

Nielsen’s data shows that since the start of its monthly reports four years ago, streaming has grown by 71 percent, while broadcast and cable viewing have dropped by 21 percent and 39 percent, respectively. “While many have expected this milestone to occur sooner, sporting events, news, and new season content have kept broadcast and cable surprisingly resilient,” Nielen’s Senior Vice President Brian Fuhrer noted.

Fuhrer goes on to explain that streaming’s rise has been driven by free ad-supported streaming TV offerings (FAST channels), YouTube’s exponential audience growth, and shifts by legacy media companies to cater to streaming-focused audiences.

In May 2021, only five streaming platforms surpassed one percent of total TV viewing. As of the most recent report, that number has more than doubled to 11 platforms, including FAST channels like Pluto TV, Roku Channel, and Tubi. Combined, these free services accounted for 5.7 percent of total TV viewing, surpassing any individual broadcast network. YouTube, excluding YouTube TV, has also seen immense growth, representing 12.5 percent of all TV viewing in May and marking its fourth consecutive monthly increase.

Traditional media companies have increasingly embraced streaming, with platforms like Hulu, Paramount+, and Peacock complementing linear TV. For instance, Super Bowl LIX aired on both Fox and Tubi, and the 2024 Olympics will be available on NBC and the broadcaster’s Peacock streaming platform. In addition to its Disney+ streaming platform, Disney has also used YouTube to enhance engagement with its characters and content.

Nielsen noted that Netflix remains the leader among paid subscription services, with a 27 percent increase in viewing over the past four years. While the milestone of streaming surpassing broadcast and cable may not occur every month, particularly during football season, Nielsen predicts streaming will eventually dominate TV viewership permanently.

Nearly 600 Voice of America Staffers Laid Off.

PULSE POINTS:

❓What Happened: Nearly 600 Voice of America (VOA) employees, primarily contractors, were fired as part of a Trump administration overhaul of the agency.

👥 Who’s Involved: The Trump administration, U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), VOA employees, and senior adviser Kari Lake.

📍 Where & When: The firings were announced this week, with the employees’ last day set for May 30.

đź’¬ Key Quote: Kari Lake stated, “I don’t have editorial control over the content of VOA and OCB programming, but I can ensure our outlets have reliable and credible options as they work to craft their reporting and news programs.”

⚠️ Impact: The dismissals represent one-third of VOA’s workforce and coincide with a shift toward using One America News Network for news-feed services.

IN FULL:

The Trump administration has terminated nearly 600 employees at Voice of America (VOA) as part of a broader effort to reform the agency. The affected individuals, many of whom are contractors, were informed this week that their employment will end on May 30.

The dismissals account for approximately one-third of the agency’s workforce. Employees were instructed to return VOA property, including badges and credentials, by the same date. The move comes amid a restructuring of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees VOA.

This wave of firings follows an announcement by USAGM senior adviser Kari Lake that One America News Network (OANN) will now provide news-feed services to the agency’s outlets. Lake emphasized her role in ensuring credible and reliable options for the agency’s reporting, stating, “I don’t have editorial control over the content of VOA and OCB programming, but I can ensure our outlets have reliable and credible options as they work to craft their reporting and news programs.”

The restructuring efforts have faced legal challenges. Last month, a federal judge ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle VOA and its affiliated services. Despite this, the administration appears committed to reshaping the agency’s operations and partnerships.

VOA has been a source of controversy in the past. In 2020, the news outlet was accused of parroting propaganda from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cuts to the USAGM have also affected other broadcasters like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which launched a lawsuit against the Trump administration in March, arguing President Trump violated the Constitution by withholding Congress-approved funding.

White House Fumes Over Don Jr’s Media Treatment.

PULSE POINTS:

âť“What Happened: The Trump administration is reportedly considering a federal investigation into Axel Springer, the German parent company of POLITICO and Business Insider. The possible probe follows a thinly sourced story published by Business Insider suggesting that Donald Trump Jr.’s business interests could be akin to Hunter Biden’s corrupt political activities.

👥 Who’s Involved: The Trump White House, Donald Trump Jr., Business Insider journalist Bethany McLean, and Axel Springer.

📍 Where & When: The issue arose following a May 6 report by Business Insider, with rumors of a possible federal probe emerging between May 13 and 15.

💬 Key Quote: An unnamed White House adviser reportedly referred to Axel Springer as a “German influence operation” and suggested its reporting could be “illegal foreign political meddling.”

⚠️ Impact: The potential probe could place Axel Springer under federal scrutiny for its media activities in the U.S.

IN FULL:

The Trump White House is reportedly weighing a federal investigation into Axel Springer, the German media conglomerate that owns POLITICO and Business Insider. The move follows a recent report by Business Insider comparing Donald Trump Jr.’s business activities to Hunter Biden‘s alleged selling of White House access, involving his father, former President Joe Biden.

On May 6, journalist Bethany McLean published a piece in Business Insider titled “Don Jr. Is the New Hunter Biden.” The report highlighted Trump Jr.’s involvement with the venture capital firm 1789 Capital and quoted an anonymous source allegedly close to the Trump family claiming, “What they’re doing is selling access to the president via the back door.”

The comparison parallels Hunter Biden, who has faced scrutiny for years over his foreign business dealings and accusations of leveraging White House access during his father’s political career. Notably, other Biden family members, including Joe Biden’s brother, Jim Biden, faced similar allegations of political corruption.

Following the Business Insider story, reports emerged that the Trump White House is considering a federal probe of the media outlet’s foreign owner, Axel Springer. Speculation regarding the investigation has been further fueled by a story from Matthew Boyle of Breitbart News, which cites an unnamed White House adviser who described Axel Springer as a “German influence operation.” The adviser also suggested that the company’s activities might amount to “illegal foreign political meddling.”

Axel Springer’s media outlets, including POLITICO and Business Insider, are believed to have attracted the attention of senior administration officials. Notably, the German-based media conglomerate and its U.S.-based media properties could face scrutiny for potentially violating federal ethics norms.

WaPo Columnist Fears Losing Job if He Critiques Bezos’s New Relationship With Trump.

PULSE POINTS:

âť“What Happened: Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin admitted during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored that he fears being fired if he comments on or critiques the newspaper’s owner, Amazon founder and mega-billionaire Jeff Bezos.

👥 Who’s Involved: Piers Morgan, Josh Rogin, Bill Maher, Jeff Bezos, and Donald J. Trump.

📍 Where & When: The debate occurred on Piers Morgan Uncensored, following Maher’s account of his dinner with President Trump on Real Time, which aired on Friday.

đź’¬ Key Quote: Rogin stated, “I’m not in a position to comment on Jeff Bezos, because if I comment on Jeff Bezos, then I could be fired from my job.”

⚠️ Impact: The conversation highlighted potential double standards in media criticism and raised questions about the influence of media ownership. In recent months, Bezos has taken a more active role in the Washington Post, especially on the newspaper’s editorial side.

IN FULL:

On a recent episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, columnist Josh Rogin found himself in a tight spot as he was challenged to explain why he criticized comedian Bill Maher‘s recent dinner meeting with Present Donald J. Trump while overlooking similar actions by Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos. Rogin was pressed by host Piers Morgan over dismissing Maher’s engagement with Trump as a “PR stunt,” accusing the host of HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher of inadvertently serving as a tool for Trump’s publicity.

Morgan grilled the Washington Post columnist on his apparent selective criticism, pointing out that Bezos, who owns the newspaper, has had several recent public and private interactions with Trump. “He called him and praised him after he was shot. At a New York Times event in December Bezos said he was optimistic about a second Trump presidency. He had dinner at Mar-a-Lago in December 2024. He pledged a million dollars to Trump’s inauguration fund. He attended the inauguration. Amazon, obviously, one of his, companies [Amazon] streamed Trump’s inauguration on its Prime Video service and is also paying $40 million for a Melania Trump documentary,” Morgan noted.

After several exchanges, Morgan finally drew a stunning confession from Rogin after lampooning the columnist’s unwillingness to discuss Bezos. “All right, but look, Josh, look, if it looks like a duck and it sounds like a duck, it’s probably a duck,” Morgan jabbed, adding: “I mean, you can appreciate that if you’re Bill Maher watching you refusing to be remotely critical of what your own owner has done with Trump in terms of kissing the ring, you could potentially see that he might think there’s a double standard there.”

An exasperated Rogin relented, admitting: “You know, I see what you’re trying to do, Piers, but I’m not in a position to comment on Jeff Bezos, because if I comment on Jeff Bezos, then I could be fired from my job and you know that, so I’m not going to do that.”

The National Pulse reported last October that the Washington Post saw over 200,000 digital readers cancel their subscriptions and its editorial staff revolt against ownership after Bezos and the newspaper’s editorial board decided not to endorse Democratic Party presidential candidate Kamala Harris, choosing instead not to back any candidate. Since the 2024 election, the newspaper has bled subscribers and revenue while facing a second staff revolt in late February of this year when Bezos announced changes to the newspaper’s opinion section, stating it would now focus on promoting “personal liberties and free markets.”

The Palestinians Are Fighting Amongst Each Other Again.

The Palestinian Authority has halted Qatari-owned Al Jazeera broadcasts in parts of the West Bank, accusing the channel of incitement and bias. Al Jazeera, known for a pro-Palestinian slant, condemned the move, claiming it is an attempt to suppress information about events in the territories. The closure follows coverage of a security crackdown in Jenin, where at least 11 people have died.

Al Jazeera, already barred in Israel, faced enforcement actions in Ramallah, marking the second such incident in recent months. Video footage showed a uniformed officer delivering closure orders to Al Jazeera staff.

The Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, which holds no power in Gaza, has accused Al Jazeera of sowing discord within the region. The Authority, cooperating with Israeli security, faces declining public support, particularly in Jenin, a stronghold for armed factions.

Security operations in Jenin have intensified since December, with battles against groups linked to Islamic Jihad and Hamas. Analysts suggest the Palestinian Authority seeks to reassert control and demonstrate its strategic significance to international stakeholders, including the future U.S. administration.

The crackdown on Al Jazeera follows Israel’s similar actions. The Israeli parliament previously voted to close the broadcaster, citing national security concerns.

Qatar owns not only Al Jazeera but also several other major outlets, including AJ+. The Qataris have spent billions of dollars advocating for groups like Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hezbollah over the years.

The National Pulse’s Editor-in-Chief, Raheem Kassam, has previously spoken on Qatari media influence in the U.S., noting how Al Jazeera pushed far-left viewpoints supporting activists like Black Lives Matter (BLM).

CNN Exec Says Biden Should Stand By His ‘Garbage’ Insult.

Mark Preston, a senior political analyst and vice president for political and special events programming at CNN, is pushing President Joe Biden to double down on his comments referring to supporters of President Donald J. Trump as “garbage.” Appearing early Wednesday morning on the network—which continues to struggle to retain viewership and raise revenue—Preston insisted Democrats should embrace Biden’s attack as it makes them look “strong.”

“I’m of the mindset that if you say it, you might as well just embrace it, and I do think that that’s a problem for Democrats,” Preston says, adding: “I do think if he said, listen, yeah, I do mean all those racist supporters of Donald Trump, yeah, I do think that they’re terrible. I think that people would look at the Democratic Party a little bit different.”

The CNN executive continues: “I do think that the Democratic Party, in general, doesn’t look like they are strong enough, and they will always back off of things. And I think that when Joe Biden backs off of saying what he really believes, I don’t think that’s a good look.”

Biden referred to supporters of the former Republican president as “garbage” Tuesday night during a live stream conversation with the far-left open borders group, Voto Latino. The comments drew immediate condemnation from President Trump and the 2024 vice presidential nominee, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH).

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) actually interrupted Trump during a rally last night in Pennsylvania to break the news of Biden’s remark to the Republican candidate and his thousands of supporters in attendance.

CNN has struggled to maintain viewership and revenue growth in recent years. The National Pulse reported in May that the corporate news outlet’s prime-time ratings had hit their lowest in 30 years. Meanwhile, CNN has also been forced to abandon its digital opinion section and will introduce a paywall in the hopes of reversing the network’s failing financial situation.

WaPo Drops Near 10% of Its Subscribers After Bezos Blocks Harris Endorsement.

The Washington Post is facing a revolt not only among its staff and editorial board but also among its most anti-Trump subscribers. Following the newspaper’s decision—influenced by owner and tech billionaire Jeff Bezos—not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential race, The Post has seen over 200,000 digital readers cancel their subscriptions as of Monday afternoon.

With a total readership estimated to be around 2.5 million, The Washington Post has seen nearly 10 percent of its total subscriber base evaporate in a matter of days. The Post has struggled to remain financially viable in recent years and largely relies on cash injections from Bezos to stay afloat.

THE NON-ENDORSEMENT.

Late last week, the newspaper—whose slogan, adopted in 2017 in protest of President Donald J. Trump, is “Democracy Dies in Darkness”—shocked the American political landscape when it declined to make a presidential endorsement for the first time since 1988. Will Lewis, the newspaper’s Chief Executive and Publisher, justified the decision as a move to reaffirm The Post’s independence.

Meanwhile, management at The Washington Post is reportedly concerned that the cancellations will continue to rise with its left-wing readership unsated. Marcus Brauchli, former Executive Editor of The Post, described the cancellations as significant and suggested a lack of communication and transparency by Bezos and Lewis regarding the endorsement decision is fueling the anger.

“The problem is, people don’t know why the decision was made. We basically know the decision was made but we don’t know what led to it,” Brauchli said in a recent interview with NPR. However, the former Executive Editor cautions subscribers from acting rashly, arguing: “It is a way to send a message to ownership but it shoots you in the foot if you care about the kind of in-depth, quality journalism like The Post produces.”

STAFF JUMP SHIP.

Meanwhile, the internal strife at The Washington Post is becoming increasingly untenable as well. At least two columnists and two editorial board members have resigned in protest. Molly Roberts, an eight-year veteran of the newspaper, quit on Monday, and fellow board member David Hoffman is said to be following suit. Additionally, columnist Michele Norris and editor-at-large Robert Kagan bolted from the paper over the weekend.

Kagan has gone on to insinuate that Bezos’s decision not to endorse is driven by business interests. He notes that Bezos-owned Blue Origin holds substantial NASA contracts and that the company allegedly met with Trump soon after the endorsement decision became public.

Network News Tips Scales for Kamala, Watchdog Says.

Major corporate media networks are attempting to interfere more heavily in the 2024 presidential election than in past races. According to data from the Media Research Center (MRC), broadcast news coverage of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris‘s respect campaigns has been almost entirely favorable for the latter and negative for the former.

“Since July, ABC, CBS, and NBC have treated Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris to 78 percent positive coverage, while these same networks have pummeled former Republican President Donald Trump with 85 percent negative coverage,” MRC says regarding their findings. The group notes their analysis is based on “explicitly evaluative statements about each candidate from either reporters, anchors or non-partisan sources such as experts or voters.”

The media watchdog group adds: “The difference in coverage between the two candidates is far greater than in 2016 when both Trump and then-challenger Hillary Clinton received mostly negative coverage (91 percent negative for Trump, vs. 79 percent negative for Clinton). It’s even greater than in 2020, when Joe Biden was treated to 66 percent positive coverage, vs. 92 percent negative for Trump.”

MRC’s analysis shows that since July, news coverage—mainly from ABC, NBC, and CBS—has included 230 minutes of negative stories about Trump and various allegations made against the former Republican president. Conversely, the networks have provided only minimal coverage of any controversies regarding Harris.

In fact, MRC found that 31 percent of network news airtime has been focused on negative stories regarding personal controversies. Meanwhile, just five percent of airtime was dedicated to similar topics regarding Harris.

The two most covered issues regarding Trump were the January 6 Capitol riots and allegations leveled by Harris—and other top Democrats—accusing Trump of being a “fascist” and “a danger to democracy.”
