Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim, a 22-year-old Somali refugee, has been charged with murder in connection to the death of his seven-months-pregnant Swedish girlfriend, Saga Forsgren Elneborg. Ibrahim is accused of killing 20-year-old Saga Forsgren Elneborg in her Örebro home. The prosecution alleges that Ibrahim strangled Elneborg to death in an alleged honor killing.
Prosecutor Elizabeth Anderson stated that Ibrahim committed the murder in an “honor context,” aiming to maintain or reclaim his family’s honor by killing Elneborg, who was carrying his child. Anderson also noted that there’s no evidence proving that Ibrahim informed his family of his relationship with Elneborg or her pregnancy.
Text messages between the couple suggest Ibrahim feared telling his family about Elneborg’s pregnancy. The messages also indicate that Ibrahim wanted Elneborg to have an abortion. The tension escalated till Elneborg’s death. Ibrahim allegedly used a lamp cord to strangle her.
Ibrahim denies the charges and insists upon his love for his late girlfriend. Ibrahim’s story on the tragedy will further unravel when he faces his murder trial scheduled for next Wednesday.
Sweden, like many European nations, has struggled to integrate migrants from Islamic countries like Somalia. The country is home to several notorious “no-go zones,” and crimes committed by migrants are frequent.
