🕰️ HISTORY: The SPLC has long been a polarizing entity, with critics accusing it of labeling conservative organizations as hate groups while allegedly failing to maintain transparency in its own operations. Founded in 1971 in Montgomery, Alabama by civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr, it emerged in the aftermath of the civil rights movement with an initial focus on using litigation to target the Ku Klux Klan. In 2018, the SPLC was forced to pay anti-extremist activist Maajid Nawaz $3.4m after wrongly labeling him a far-right extremist.
