Santorum: Religious Liberty Under Attack from the Government (VIDEO)

During an appearance in Albany, NY on Tuesday, Rick Santorum continued to deliver his message of religious liberty:

The battles are real, I’m not minimalizing… The movie that you saw here today, called “One Generation Away,” is a movie that our movie company produced in conjunction with the American Family Association, and it’s a movie about the threat to religious liberty in America today. It is real. If you had the chance to see the movie, you saw several vignettes that we talked about, of how religious liberty is under attack in America from the government of this country, really for the first time in the history of our country. And it is accelerating. We could’ve made another movie with seven or eight different vignettes that just happened in the last month in America. All of these things are beginning to pick up. And we say in the movie, and it’s really true: Once you get religious liberty wrong, then you spiral down very quickly, that’s why we can’t allow for us to get it wrong.

He went on, urging his audience to be faithful, and to stand up for their faith:

We have an obligation to speak out and to try to influence that tide, and it was not always the way it is and one of the reasons that the tide is swimming in the other direction is because for far too long we have sat like the frog in the pot. And we have simply just allowed the stove to be turned up and turned up and we have been silent. We have self-censored. We haven’t wanted to speak out because, ‘well, you know it’s only one thing, you know, it doesn’t affect my life that much, so I’ll just, you know, we’ll move on to the next one.’ And one after another.

Santorum also told a story about his failed campaign to override the veto of a bill in 1999 that would have banned partial-birth abortions. He shared with the audience an email he received afterwards about a young woman who cancelled her scheduled abortion after hearing Santorum’s speech on the Senate floor. He encouraged them to continue their fight:

God has a different measure of success. So when you think you’re out there fighting the fight, giving it all, making the sacrifice, taking the hits and you think you’re failing, just remember, the only reason you feel that way is because you haven’t gotten the email yet.

Santorum closed by encouraging his audience to stand up for their religious freedom in any and all ways possible despite the difficulty, telling them “freedom is hard.” Santorum continues to be one of the most vocal and ardent champions of religious freedom among the expected 2016 Republican candidates.
