The Democrats may have the “Party of CEOs” on their side, but the vast majority of Americans believe in “live and let live” tolerance, not purging religious people of their livelihoods, according to the latest two polls.

In a February AP-GfK poll, almost 6 out of 10 of people believed that wedding related businesses should be allowed to refuse service for religious reasons. Last week’s Marist poll showed that 65 percent of American oppose fining the wedding florists, bakers, and photographers.

The February AP-GfK poll:

In states where same-sex couples can be married legally, do you think that wedding-related businesses with religious objections should be allowed to refuse service to same-sex couples, or not?

  • 57% – Yes, they should be allowed to refuse service
  • 39% – No, they should not be allowed to refuse service

The March Marist poll:

Do you strongly support, support, oppose, or strongly oppose imposing penalties or fines for individuals who refuse to provide wedding-related services to same sex couples even if their refusal is based on their religious beliefs?

  • 65% opposed or strongly opposed imposing fines

Do you strongly support, support, oppose, or strongly oppose imposing penalties or fines for public officials who refuse to perform same sex marriages even if their refusal is based on their religious beliefs?

  • 58% opposed or strongly opposed imposing fines on the public officials
