This week’s pro-life media pick goes to Gov. Jeb Bush for his compassionate, thoughtful response concerning Pope Francis’ announcement regarding confession and abortion. In responding to a question from Fox News’ Martha McCallum about Pope Francis’ move to allow all Catholic priests to absolve the sin of abortion, Gov. Bush, a practicing Catholic, stated:

Look, I think we could all use a lot of mercy in this world, and the Pope is a loving person and having absolution — allowing priests to give absolution is extraordinary, but it’s not — I’m not surprised at all. I hope that we also focus on mercy for the unborn — the hundreds of thousands of babies that will die. I think we need to have a society that protects life from beginning to end, and we should be a repentant society, for sure, and mercy should be at the heart of everything.

Gov. Bush’s response begins with a fundamental truth: that the pro-life movement is a movement of mercy and hope – as Pope Francis has been so successful in communicating. Gov. Bush then goes on to draw attention to the plight of hundreds of thousands of unborn children that die in the United States each year because of abortion. Gov. Bush spoke well for voiceless unborn boys and girls — and their mothers — who suffer in our nation’s abortion culture.
