An Iraqi Uber driver in Washington, D.C. was caught in gunfire during a drive-by shooting over the weekend, comparing the city to a war zone reminiscent of his native country.
The driver, who remains unidentified, was near the Cathedral of St. Matthew on Saturday when his car was struck by a hail of bullets. Two passengers in the vehicle took cover and escaped unharmed, but the driver sustained injuries from broken glass, according to a police report.
A camera inside the car captured the entire incident, revealing another vehicle crashing into a nearby dumpster after the shooting, and its occupants fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported that five or six shots were fired from a silver SUV with tinted windows.
One individual outside the vehicle was shot in the back. Their condition remains undisclosed, and authorities are actively searching for the suspect vehicle.
The Uber driver, originally from Iraq, expressed feeling similar levels of violence and chaos in Washington D.C.
“I thank God I survived,” he said. “For some reason, God saved me.”
Another migrant in D.C., an Afghan who survived ten years serving alongside U.S. special forces, was less fortunate last month, being shot dead by thugs while working as a Lyft driver.
