Nancy Pelosi, twice the United States House of Representatives Speaker and former House Minority leader, will run to be re-elected to Congress in 2024, despite the fact she will be 84 years old next year.
Pelosi, first elected to the House of Representatives when Ronald Reagan was President in 1987, announced her intention to run in front of a number of her constituents in San Francisco on Friday, and went on to explain: “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote.”
“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” she added.
The former House Speaker has become infamous in recent years for having twice impeached former President Donald Trump and “somehow” having accrued a net worth of over $100 million despite her annual salary being in the hundreds of thousands.
Her decision to run again has re-ignited the debate surrounding America’s increasingly obvious gerontocracy, with senior political figures, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (81), Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein (90), and President Joe Biden (80), all showing signs of advanced age. The oldest Republican senator is Iowa’s Chuck Grassley, who turns 90 this month.
