A National Health Service (NHS) Trust in the UK is allowing employees to take up to one year of paid leave to deal with the problems and embarrassment of “male menopause.”
East Midlands Ambulance Service Managers suggest that portable fans and heaters should be available to those dealing with male menopause, as well as advising them to return to work slowly and seek advice for the problem. The symptoms include, among other things, anxiety, depression, low libido, and hot flushes, according to NHS guidance.
The deputy director of human resources at the Trust stated, “We provide occupational sick pay for up to 12 months based on service length. That will support absences which may result from symptoms of the andropause or where time off for medical appointments is required.”
“As well as having menopause guidance we also support anyone within the organisation who is affected directly or indirectly by the andropause [male menopause],” she added.
Meanwhile, the British General Medical Council recently updated its internal policies to suggest that menopause does not only impact women, instead using the non-female-specific term “individuals experiencing the menopause.”
