Jason Williams, a George Soros-backed Louisiana District Attorney (DA), elected after promising social justice and bail reforms, has been carjacked at gunpoint alongside his elderly mother in New Orleans.
Two men approached Williams and his 78-year-old mother bearing “high-powered automatic weapons” on Monday evening before taking the DA’s car and personal possessions. However, the suspects were unable to get far, and the vehicle was recovered later in the evening by the police.
“I think it’s important to reiterate that my mother and I are just a small fraction of the number of people impacted by violence in this city,” Williams said after the incident. “We have to collectively work on crime-prevention efforts, policing efforts and our prosecution efforts,” he added.
Williams – whose election campaign received $220,000 from George Soros –pledged to find “alternatives to incarceration” and to change what he called the “ineffective and unfair money bail system” during his 2020 election campaign.
Once elected, he introduced further reforms such as removing obstacles to parole – including for those sentenced to life without the possibility of parole – dismissing nearly 1,000 of the city’s 1,411 felony cases within his first few months of office.
Yet, since being in office, crime has skyrocketed in New Orleans, with the carjacking rate alone rising by nearly triple what it was compared to 2019. It is also the official “Murder Capital” of the United States, boasting 52 homicides for every 100,000 – far outdoing St. Louis’ 45 per 100,000.
