A staffer for Republican Senator Katie Britt was robbed and carjacked at gunpoint in Mayor Muriel Bowser‘s Washington D.C. earlier this week, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Amanda Pepper, a scheduler in Senator Britt’s office, told authorities that moments after she parked her car and began walking to her office, the suspect pointed a gun to her face and demanded she “give me your purse and keys” at around 8:30 pm on Thursday. The suspect then took her possessions and car before fleeing the scene.
Senator Britt’s office said in a statement following the incident, “It is infuriating and completely unacceptable that an American who is on Capitol Hill to serve her country cannot safely walk the streets of Washington, D.C. at 8:30 at night because of the out-of-control crime in this city.”
“Just look at the police department’s own numbers – this year, robberies are up 68% and motor vehicle thefts are up 102%. Local elected officials in the District of Columbia have the responsibility not just to their citizens, but to the country, to step up and get a hold of the crime crisis ravaging the streets of our nation’s capital,” the statement added.
This comes less than a month after Democratic Representative Enrique ‘Henry’ Cuellar was carjacked by three armed men in the U.S. Capitol. The city is expected to witness up to 1,000 carjackings by the end of this year, representing an over 100 percent increase in the offense compared to 2022.
