At least seven people have been killed in a major multi-vehicle accident on I-55 outside New Orleans, Louisiana, due to a dense “superfog” caused by marsh fires that dangerously reduced visibility on Monday. The Louisiana State Police confirmed over 158 vehicles were involved in the collision on a bridge over Lake Pontchartrain. A tanker truck hauling hazardous liquid was among the damaged vehicles, leading to a road fire. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as the rescue operation continues, with 25 individuals also hospitalized.
Images released by the Louisiana State Police show a vehicle, pushed over the edge of the bridge as a result of the crash, resting sideways in the water. The law enforcement agency also noted this was just one of several accidents in the area triggered by the heavy fog condition. A total of 25 crashes were reported on the highway, including two involving 18-wheel trucks which ended up in flames, according to St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre.
An extended stretch of the I-55, a 24-mile elevated interstate over Lake Pontchartrain, faces potential closure for an undetermined period. Approximately 100 motorists in the vicinity were stranded due to the accidents. Greg Langley, Press Secretary for the Department of Environmental Quality, commented on the tanker truck situation, stating plans are afoot to offload its hazardous cargo onto an alternative tanker. Louisianans were urged to donate blood to aid the wounded by the state’s Governor, John Bel Edwards, who also cautioned constituents about the hazardous combination of wildfire smoke and dense fog. Police are now notifying families and conducting investigations into the exact cause of the multiple crashes.
