Charges were filed Monday by Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service against four men in connection to an audacious theft of a gold toilet, an art installation worth £4.8 million ($5.8m), from Blenheim Palace. The theft transpired during an overnight raid in September 2019. The named defendants include James Sheen, 39, Michael Jones, 38, Fred Doe, 35, and Bora Guccuk, 39. The foursome is slated to stand before the Oxford Magistrates’ Court on November 28.
Hailing from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, Sheen is charged with burglary, conspiracy to transfer criminal property and transferring criminal property. On the other hand, Oxford-based Jones faces one count of burglary. Doe, residing in Ascot, Berkshire, and Guccuk, a West London resident, are both charged with one count of conspiracy to transfer criminal property.
The unique artwork, which served as a fully functioning toilet, disappeared soon after its installation at Oxfordshire’s Blenheim Palace, also known as the birthplace of Winston Churchill. To date, news of its recovery remains absent.
