A case of bubonic plague, responsible for the Black Death that killed tens of millions of people in the Middle Ages, has been reported in Oregon.
The plague victim has been identified only as a man believed to have been infected by his cat. Deschutes County health officer Dr. Richard Fawcett says, “[a]ll close contacts of the resident and their pet have been contacted and provided medication to prevent illness,” and claims the wider community is not at risk.
It is the first case of bubonic plague in the Beaver State since 2015, when a teenage boy was infected by a flea bite on a hunting trip.
The United States is experiencing issues with dangerous diseases far to the south of the Pacific Northwest, too, with Arizona sheriff Mark Lamb warning in 2023 that “Border Patrol and local agencies have seen all types of diseases like tuberculosis, scabies, COVID, hepatitis A and B, gonorrhea, syphilis, mumps, chicken pox, [and] dengue fever” among illegal aliens entering the country from Mexico.
