The United Kingdom’s governing Conservative Party is on the verge of entering the political wilderness according to former UKIP leader Nigel Farage. Writing for the Telegraph, Farage warns it is too late for the Conservatives to avert an electoral disaster at the next general election. The man dubbed “Mr. Brexit” by former U.S. President Donald Trump, says the political state of the Conservatives is so dire, the “…question now is not ‘How many seats will the Tories lose?’ but ‘What happens next?'”
According to Farage, the party’s abandonment of conservatism in favor of globalism, mass immigration, and political expedience has caused an “enormous split” with its grassroots. “The grassroots – the beating heart of any political organisation – is like a lost tribe, wandering around aimlessly. They are desperate to believe in somebody or something. But who? And what?” writes Farage. He adds with the general election a year or less away: “It is almost certainly too late for the Tories to answer those questions in any meaningful way.”
While attending the Conservative Party’s annual conference, Farage observed, “Almost nobody I spoke to while I was there believed in the Government. They couldn’t tell me what direction it is heading in and they had little or no faith in its leading personalities.” The grassroots’ disillusionment left Farage concluding the, “Tories have lost sight of why they exist.”
Despite the dour electoral outlook for the Conservative majority in Parliament, Farage says he hopes “…when there is a much smaller number of Tory MPs in Westminster, the chance to realign the centre of British politics will come.” The Brexit leader could even end up leading that change himself. Last month, Farage joked he might end up the leader of the Conservative Party in a few years. The quip was met with panicked denunciations from Conservative Party chairman Greg Hands.
