Rep. George Santos (R-NY) could face expulsion from Congress as soon as Thursday. There is speculation the New York Republican may also choose to resign from office during press conference he has scheduled for Thursday on the steps of the Capitol Building – however during a Friday ‘Space’ on X (formerly Twitter) a defiant Rep. Santos insisted he would not be resigning.
House Republicans are expected to bring Rep. Michael Guest’s (R-Miss.) resolution to expel Rep. Santos to the floor later today. Once introduced, the resolution – considered privileged – will start a sort of legislative clock where House leadership will have two days to schedule a vote.
Two months ago, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito (R-N.Y.) attempted and failed to expel Santos after the United States District Court of the Eastern District of New York handed down a 23 count indictment against the Congressman. Prosecutors allege that Santos filed fraudulent fundraising reports with the FEC in an effort to obtain financial support for his campaign. They additionally allege the New York Congressman charged the credit cards of campaign contributors without authorization and that some of that money may have ended up in his personal account.
The National Pulse perviously reported that a U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ethics investigation concluded with a criminal referral of Santos to the Department of Justice. The Committee report concluded there was “substantial evidence that Representative George Santos: knowingly caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission; used campaign funds for personal purposes; engaged in fraudulent conduct in connection with RedStone Strategies LLC; and engaged in knowing and willful violations of the Ethics in Government Act as it relates to his Financial Disclosure (FD) Statements filed with the House.”
