Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) was conspicuously present standing behind Hunter Biden while the president’s son announced to the press he would not attend his scheduled deposition before House Republicans, defying a Congressional subpoena. While the presence of the California Democrat caused confusion for some observers, Congressional rules actually mandated his attendance.
Biden held his press conference in an outdoor space referred to as the “Senate Swamp.” The space is among several outdoor areas – such as the House Triangle – used by Members of Congress for press events. Non-Members can also reserve the spaces for use but only with the sponsorship and physical attendance of a member. Rep. Swalwell has confirmed he was the member who reserved the space for Hunter Biden.
“There is absolutely zero evidence Hunter or his father acted corruptly,” Rep. Swalwell said regarding his attendance and support for Biden. He added: “So I’m not going to sit quietly and let MAGA Republicans do Trump’s bidding in Congress.”
Swalwell’s decision to reserve the space for Hunter Biden may have unintended legal consequences for the Congressmen, however. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) – a member of House Judiciary along with Swalwell – suggested the California Democrat may have aided and abetted a crime by assisting Hunter Biden defy a Congressional subpoena. “He’s a member of this committee, he’s aware of it,” Issa said. Adding Swalwell’s action was “at minimum an ethics violation.”
In 2020 it was revealed Swalwell had carried on a sexual relationship with a California-based Democrat fundraiser named Christine Fang. The woman, whose actual name was Fang Fang, was exposed as a Chinese intelligence operative who was targeting U.S. elected officials as part of the Chinese Communist Party influence operation.
