The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is “exploring opportunities” to force Royal Navy personnel to take postgraduate courses on “climate change and, most importantly, its relevance to defense”.
The plans were revealed the same week the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales left for exercises in the Baltic and days after Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond arrived in Gibraltar following combat with Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, highlighting what critics argue are the MoD’s clear misplaced priorities.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Andrew Montford, director of the Net Zero Watch think tank, said Defence Secretary Grant Shapps “needs to get a grip” on the situation. “Net zero zealots will sacrifice anything and everything to their irrational faith,” Montford said. “Economic security and energy security have already been tossed aside, so it’s no surprise to see national security taking a back seat as well.”
“While this course is not yet mandated, it does provide a comprehensive overview on the science behind climate change and most importantly its relevance to defence [sic],” the leaked paper reads. According to the document, the relevance of climate change to defense is that it “threatens peace” and could worsen “gender inequality.”
Last month, the Royal Navy faced criticism when it was revealed that it was reassigning officers in key strategic roles to jobs in “diversity and inclusion.”
