Veteran columnist George Will says President Joe Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris as Vice-President was the most consequential mistake of his presidency. The Washington Post columnist compares Harris with Henry Wallace, the second man to serve as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s number two. Before Roosevelt died in office, Wallace was infamously demoted to Commerce Secretary in favor of Harry S. Truman due to his eccentric thoughts on mysticism and pro-Soviet Union political stances.
Harris, who would take over as President of the United States should something happen to the 81-year-old Joe Biden, is deeply unpopular among Americans. According to FiveThirtyEight’s approval aggregate, Harris has only a 36.4 percent approval rating as of February 20th, while Biden’s is slightly higher at 39.5 percent.
Before her elevation to the Vice-Presidency, Harris served as a Democratic Senator for the State of California. As a lawmaker, Harris staked out progressive positions deeply out of alignment with the majority of the American people. As Vice President, she was tapped to oversee the Biden government’s U.S. border policy, which has devolved into a crisis, driving voter anger with Biden.
The California Democrat’s penchant for public gaffes, narcissism, and progressive politics have led some in the Democrat Party to call for her to be replaced as Biden’s 2024 Vice-Presidential nominee. They point to California Governor Gavin Newsom, a political rival of Harris, as a more tolerable choice.
In her rise to political power, Harris has been accused of engaging in unethical behavior, including carrying on a sexual relationship with former Speaker of the California Assembly Willie Brown. The relationship allegedly played a role in her appointment as District Attorney for Alameda County and to several state boards.
