The League of Conservation Voters is pledging $120 million to support President Joe Biden’s re-election efforts. Officials with the Biden campaign have indicated that the environmentalist group’s pledge pushes total outside spending on behalf of the Democrat incumbent close to $1 billion.
Separate from outside spending by Democrat-aligned groups, the Biden campaign expects to raise $2 billion over the 2024 presidential campaign cycle. Democrat-aligned groups tend to announce their planned spending early in the election cycle. However, it remains to be seen if they can raise the billion-dollar war chest predicted by the Biden campaign.
Several organizations spanning climate advocacy groups, labor unions, and conventional SuperPACs have pledged financial backing to Biden’s campaign. They range from left-leaning groups like MoveOn to NeverTrump Republican organizations like Republican Voters Against Trump. Among the highest contributors are Future Forward, which has reserved over $250 million in TV advertising, and American Bridge, a Democrat-aligned opposition research group that says it plans to devote $140 million to anti-Trump advertisements in swing states.
Republican-aligned groups — on the other hand — tend not to announce pledged spending ahead of time. However, fundraising numbers reported to the FEC indicate that the outside groups supporting former President Donald Trump and other Republican candidates in Congress will play a significant financial role in November’s election.
In response to the pledged levels of campaign spending, Tiffany Muller — president of the government reform group End Citizens United — told the New York Times in an interview: “The sheer scale of what we’re talking about has never been seen before in our country’s history.”
