A video circulating on the social media platform TikTok depicts a migrant advising other migrants on how to use progressive squatting laws to steal unoccupied homes in the U.S.
Venezuelan national Leonel Moreno, a TikToker with a 500,000-strong online following, says in the video, “I found out that there is a law that says that if a house is not inhabited, we can seize it.” Moreno states that his friends have “already taken about seven homes.” He claims migrants must “invade” unoccupied homes to avoid living on the streets.
Concerns about the erosion of private property rights provoked by far-left progressive squatting laws are intensifying. Some see the Moreno video as a testament to the fact that these laws are being manipulated, jeopardizing landlords’ rights.
Just this week, a New York City homeowner was arrested for altering the locks on her own house that was occupied by illegal squatters. In New York, if squatters occupy a property for at least 30 days they are entitled to “squatters rights.”
