The number of “gotaways” — a term for illegal aliens who evade Border Patrol — has seen a marked rise under the Biden government, growing 340 percent from the peak numbers during former President Donald J. Trump‘s term in office. U.S. Customs and Border Protection data reveals that over 670,000 illegal immigrants were able to avoid agents and immediate detainment in fiscal year 2023.
Between 2021, when Biden first took office, and the end of the fiscal year 2023 last October, Customs and Border Protection estimates that 1.6 million “gotaways” entered the country illegally, avoiding capture. Overall, estimates reveal that it is likely over 13 million illegal immigrants have entered the country under the Biden government. However, many of these individuals were initially detained by border agents and then subsequently released into the U.S. interior after claiming asylum. At the time of their release, these alleged asylum seekers are given an immigration court date — however, these legal proceedings often don’t take place for several years or more.
Under former President Trump, the number of “gotaways” never exceeded 151,000 in a single fiscal year — with the peak occurring in 2019 prior to the pandemic. The Obama government recorded a “gotaways” high of 171,000 in the fiscal year 2013. The Biden government’s refusal to take serious action to tackle the ongoing border crisis has fueled a flood of illegal immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The method for calculating “gotaways” involves taking into account the number of detected illegal immigrants who did not make contact with Border Patrol officers through various means, such as sensors, cameras, and footprints. According to the Biden government, the total number of illegal immigrants encountered while attempting to enter the U.S. exceeded 3.2 million in the fiscal year 2023.
