Lawrence Tabak, principal deputy director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has confirmed that the NIH funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology through Peter Daszak’s EcoHealth Alliance group.
The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic asked Tabak directly if NIH had funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab through EcoHealth. “It depends on your definition of gain-of-function research. If you’re speaking about the generic term, yes, we did,” Tabak confirmed.
“Because… but this is research, the generic term, this research that goes on in many, many labs around the country, it is not regulated, and the reason it’s not regulated is it poses no threat or harm to anybody,” he added, stumbling over his words.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who formerly led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and served as Chief Medical Advisor to the President under Joe Biden until the end of 2022, told Congress in 2021 that NIH “has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.”
A LONG HISTORY.
Many politicians and public health officials, including Fauci, have long dismissed evidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology caused the coronavirus pandemic through a lab leak. They also downplayed the idea the Wuhan virus could have been created through gain-of-function research.
It is now accepted that a lab leak was likely the origin of COVID-19. It appears this was dismissed largely to undermine then-President Donald Trump, who spoke out on the likelihood of a lab leak early on.
EcoHealth, first exposed by The National Pulse in 2020, has continued to receive money to experiment with exotic bat viruses in Asia. Emails from Daszak suggest he still has hundreds if not thousands of coronavirus samples “in freezers in Wuhan.”
The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic’s investigation finally resulted in the U.S. government announcing EcoHealth funding would be suspended, and the group proposed for debarment on Wednesday.
