Former South Carolina Governor Nimarata ‘Nikki’ Haley appears to be plotting a coup to seize the Republican presidential nomination from former President Donald J. Trump by forcing a brokered Republican National Convention in mid-July. Haley has continued to court donor support despite suspending her presidential primary campaign in March.
Social media posts from Mitti Randhawa, Haley‘s brother, have added fuel to speculation that the former South Carolina Governor may attempt a floor revolt similar to the one spearheaded by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) during the 2016 Republican convention. On Wednesday, investigative journalist Laura Loomer reported that the Trump campaign had contacted Haley’s team regarding Randhawa’s social media posts. According to Loomer, a Haley staffer only replied snarkily, stating, “I’m sure the Trump family has done the same to Nikki Haley.”
This past Sunday, Randhawa posted a photo of himself and his sister on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “The support is real! Nikki Haley for President! Milwaukee, here we come!” Loomer responded to Haley’s brother asking him if the former Republican presidential candidate is “planning a coup against Trump at the convention?”
“Yup, what the actual hell! Deal with it. It’s happening Sis!” Randhawa replied before adding: “There is a movement, a serious movement, and you and your minions cannot deny it.”
Randhawa’s comments appear to confirm concerns among national Republican leaders that Haley intends to attempt to sabotage the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. The National Pulse reported that Haley met with a group of former campaign donors in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 10. According to Haley, the event was ostensibly to express her gratitude to donors. However, having not formally endorsed Trump, there are fears that Haley may have used the meeting to pitch her anti-Trump backers on a plan to cause chaos at the convention.
