On Thursday, MSNBC host Joy Reid laughed as guest Elie Mystal, justice correspondent for The Nation, delivered a racially charged rant targeting Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas and other black conservatives. During a segment, Reid referred to a report from Fix the Court, alleging that Thomas has received over $4 million in gifts during his Supreme Court tenure.
Mystal claimed that Justice Thomas, along with Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), and conservative commentator Candace Owens, held their views for monetary gain. “What they’re getting is what Byron Donalds wants. What they’re getting is Jim Crow,” Mystal said. The far-left writer for The Nation added: “What they’re getting is a guy like Clarence Thomas who, like Byron Donalds, believes that as long as [black people] don’t face extreme violence, they can rise above.”
Mystal continued, stating, “If you’re black and you tell white people that, they will give you money.” He claimed that Thomas had been rewarded for echoing the sentiments that white donors wanted to hear. According to Mystal, the Supreme Court Justice received significantly more in gifts compared to his colleagues, with the report suggesting $4 million in gifts over 20 years, while Justice Samuel Alito and the late Justice Antonin Scalia reportedly received around $200,000 each.
Donalds, considered a potential vice-presidential candidate for former President Donald J. Trump, had earlier on Thursday clashed with Reid regarding marital rates in black families. In response to Mystal’s remarks, which ended with a claim that black conservatives profit by reinforcing certain views, Reid commented, “It’s wild,” while shaking her head.
Mystal concluded by asserting that conservative black figures like Scott, Donalds, and Owens exist because “the grift is good.”
