President-elect Donald J. Trump has tapped House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as his administration’s Ambassador to the United Nations. She was the first congressional leader to endorse Trump’s third presidential campaign, lending her support in November 2022. The National Pulse reported that the New York Republican was being seriously considered for the position last week.
“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump said in a statement on Monday. The President-elect added: “Elise is a strong and very smart America First fighter. She was the first Member of Congress to Endorse me, and has always been a staunch advocate.”
“Elise is a senior Member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Intelligence Committee, and led the charge against anti-semitism on college campuses,” Trump continued, concluding: “She will be an incredible Ambassador to the United Nations, delivering Peace through Strenght and America First National Security policies!”
Stefanik, for her part, says she is “truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination” and “stand[s] ready to advance President Donald J. Trump’s restoration of America First peace through strength leadership on the world stage on Day One at the United Nations.”
The decision to appoint Stefanik as Ambassador to the United Nations likely signals that Republicans believe they will have at least a several-seat majority in the House and that whoever is named as her Republican successor can hold her New York district. However, the nomination of Stefanik also means that further appointments from the House are unlikely unless the Member is from a deeply Republican district.
