President Joe Biden’s move to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, for gun and tax evasion convictions, despite repeatedly denying he would do so prior to the election, has sparked widespread backlash. However, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has denied that the 82-year-old’s now-broken promises should “now be seen as lies.”
“First of all, one of the things that the President always believes is to be truthful to the American people. That is something that he always truly believes,” Jean-Pierre claimed in comments aboard Air Force One.
“Hunter was singled out because his last name was Biden, because he was the President’s son, that’s what we saw,” Jean-Pierre claimed, saying the Democrat had decided to issue a blanket pardon because “enough is enough.”
Journalists pressed the White House Press Secretary on whether the First Son supposedly being “singled out politically” proves the Department of Justice (DOJ) is partisan—an accusation President-elect Donald J. Trump has often leveled at the department, but which the White House has, until now, denied.
Jean-Pierre avoided giving a clear answer, saying Biden “believes in the Department of Justice” but “politics infected the process” of convicting his son.
Biden does not intend to dismiss Attorney General Merrick Garland.
