News Nation reports that the shooter was an illegal immigrant who had overstayed their visa and that the agent had been shot in the neck. Police have closed the area of the roadway where the shooting took place, telling drivers to seek alternate routes.
The shooting comes as newly-inaugurated President Donald J. Trump has declared a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico. Authorities have also closed the infamous border crossing at El Paso just minutes after Trump was sworn in.
The new administration has also shut down the CBP One app, which was used by hundreds of thousands of illegals to be paroled into the United States under the former Biden-Harris regime.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Data was released on Tuesday, reflecting economic activity in the United States during the third quarter.
🎯IMPACT: The growth reflects an acceleration from the second quarter’s 3.8 percent annualized growth rate, signaling strong economic performance.
IN FULL
The U.S. economy grew at a strong 4.3 percent annual pace during the third quarter, as per new government data released on Tuesday. This figure significantly exceeded the 3.0 percent growth forecasted by economists polled by FactSet, a financial data firm, and is the best quarterly rate of growth in two years.
According to the Commerce Department, the GDP growth—a measure of the nation’s output of goods and services—represents a notable increase from the 3.8 percent annualized growth rate in the second quarter. The acceleration suggests that the U.S. economy remains resilient despite concerns over deflation and a weakening job market.
Consumption was the key driver of growth, with the purchases up 3.5 percent on the quarter. Higher exports and lower imports also contributed to the growth boost.
Meanwhile, another important metric, real final sales to private domestic purchasers, rose at 3.0 percent in the third quarter. While strong, this number does indicate some potential weakening if the trend continues to lag behind overall growth.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D), federal prosecutors, and several current and former Minnesota state officials.
📍WHEN & WHERE: Letters were sent on December 22 requesting interviews with officials. Investigations are ongoing in Minnesota.
💬KEY QUOTE: “Whistleblowers have made it clear that American taxpayers were defrauded in Minnesota, raising serious questions about whether Governor Walz and Attorney General Ellison failed to act or were complicit in the theft.” – James Comer.
🎯IMPACT: Federal prosecutors have charged individuals with stealing over $240 million, and the investigation has widened to multiple state-run programs, potentially implicating senior officials.
IN FULL
The House Oversight Committee has expanded its investigation into alleged fraud within Minnesota’s social services programs, issuing requests for interviews with current and former state officials and seeking cooperation from federal agencies. Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent letters to seven Minnesota officials asking them to participate in transcribed interviews scheduled for late January and early February 2026. The committee also contacted Attorney General Pam Bondi and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to request federal assistance with the inquiry.
One of the letters was addressed to Emily Honer, director of Nutrition Program Services at the Minnesota Department of Education. It stated, “The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating reports of widespread fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs. As the Director of Nutrition Program Services and in your previous roles… you have information that will assist the Committee’s investigation.” Honer was asked to appear for an interview on January 26, 2026.
The investigation follows federal prosecutions tied to the Minnesota-based, Somali-run nonprofit Feeding Our Future, where prosecutors allege more than $240 million was stolen from the Federal Child Nutrition Program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities say defendants submitted false meal claims and diverted taxpayer funds to luxury purchases and overseas investments, including real estate in Nairobi, Kenya, and possible transfers to Somalia. Some funds may have passed through regions where the jihadist group Al-Shabaab operates.
As the probe widened, investigators began examining other Minnesota programs, including Medicaid, which has paid out roughly $18 billion since 2018. Federal officials and investigators estimate that a significant portion of those funds may have been obtained fraudulently. Recent court filings and reporting suggest that total losses tied to Minnesota social services fraud, much of it linked to Somali-run networks, could approach $9 billion.
Several Somali background suspects have pleaded guilty in recent months. In one case, a woman admitted to stealing millions through Medicaid and food assistance fraud. Prosecutors have described the schemes as interconnected, with some defendants involved in multiple programs simultaneously.
The scale of the fraud has raised questions about oversight by state leadership, including whether Governor Tim Walz (D) and Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) were aware of the problems earlier. Whistleblowers allege that Walz’s administration quashed early attempts to expose the scandal and threatened them with retaliation.
Walz has admitted responsibility for the situation, stating, “This is on my watch. I am accountable for this. And more importantly, I am the one that will fix it.”

🎯IMPACT: The decision could kill the offshore wind projects altogether.
IN FULL
The Trump administration has halted the leases for five majoroffshore wind developments under construction along the East Coast, invoking concerns about national security raised by the Department of War. The Department of the Interior (DOI) made the announcement on Monday, stating the pause takes effect immediately. It applies to Vineyard Wind 1, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Sunrise Wind, Empire Wind, and Revolution Wind.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum posted on X that the projects are “expensive, unreliable, heavily subsidized,” adding that “ONE natural gas pipeline supplies as much energy as these 5 projects COMBINED.” He noted that President Donald J. Trump “is bringing common sense back to energy policy & putting security FIRST!”
The move stems from issues with radar systems, where rotating turbine blades and reflective structures produce interference known as clutter, potentially masking real targets or creating false ones. A 2024 Department of Energy report indicated that raising radar detection thresholds to filter out clutter might lead to overlooking genuine threats. The New York Times described the decision as a significant intensification of President Trump’s longstanding opposition to offshore wind farms, with the America First leader previously clashing with the Scottish Goverment over turbines despoiling the sea views at his golf course in Aberdeenshire.
The former Biden government had accelerated approvals for wind farm initiatives, even as questions arose regarding impacts on the environment and maritime navigation, as part of its climate change agenda.

📍WHEN & WHERE: The lawsuit was announced Monday, targeting Washington, D.C.’s firearm restrictions.
💬KEY QUOTE: “This Civil Rights Division will defend American citizens from unconstitutional restrictions of commonly used firearms, in violation of their Second Amendment rights.” – Harmeet K. Dhillon
🎯IMPACT: The case seeks to ensure the enforcement of Second Amendment rights for law-abiding citizens, as established in the landmark Heller decision 17 years ago.
IN FULL
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, arguing that the district’s ban on several firearms, including the AR-15, violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit targets restrictions that prohibit residents from owning certain semiautomatic rifles and other firearms that the DOJ says are commonly used for lawful purposes. According to the department, these bans conflict with Supreme Court precedent recognizing citizens’ right to keep and bear arms.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet K. Dhillon said the case reflects the department’s renewed focus on upholding constitutional rights. “This Civil Rights Division will defend American citizens from unconstitutional restrictions of commonly used firearms, in violation of their Second Amendment rights,” Dhillon stated.
The suit was filed by the DOJ’s newly created Second Amendment Section, which was established to focus specifically on defending gun rights under federal law. The department said the case is intended to uphold the protections recognized in the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District ofColumbia v. Heller. That ruling struck down D.C.’s handgun ban and affirmed that the Second Amendment protects the right to possess firearms for lawful purposes such as self-defense in the home.
The DOJ argues that, 17 years after the Heller decision, D.C.’s current firearms restrictions undermine the rights secured by that ruling, including those of the original plaintiff, D.C. resident Dick Heller. Dhillon said the case underscores the importance of ensuring that law-abiding citizens can own firearms without unlawful limitations.
The lawsuit comes as debates over the scope of the Second Amendment continue across the country. In recent years, courts and public officials have taken sharply different views on how broadly the amendment should be applied. Leaders like Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have openly criticized the Second Amendment, arguing for aggressive gun control measures that conflict with Supreme Court precedent.

IN FULL
President Donald J. Trump has revealed plans for the U.S. Navy to develop a new line of “Trump-class” battleships, starting with the construction of two vessels. The America First leader shared the news from his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he is vacationing over the holidays, joined by War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan.
🚨 @POTUS: As Commander-in-Chief, it’s my great honor to announce that I’ve approved a plan for the Navy to begin the construction of two brand new, very large battleships… They’ll be the fastest, the biggest, and by far — 100x more powerful than any battleship ever built. pic.twitter.com/226O1UxOeS
Trump described the vessels as components of a new “Golden Fleet,” with ambitions to produce up to 25 such battleships. He stated that these would be the “largest we’ve ever built.”
“They will have 100 times the force, the power, and there’s never been anything like these ships,” Trump said. “We envision that these two ships will be the first of a whole new class of battleships that will be produced in the years to come.”
The lead vessel in the class will bear the name USS Defiant. This development follows shortly after the Navy abandoned efforts to develop a different, smaller warship due to escalating expenses and extended timelines.

🎯IMPACT: Two officers and Romero sustained non-life threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital.
IN FULL
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers engaged in a tense and physical altercation with Juan Carlos Rodrigues Romero, a Cuban illegal immigrant, as they attempted to take him into custody on Sunday. The encounter in St. Paul, Minnesota, started when agents spotted Romero entering a white SUV. Officers initiated a lawful traffic stop, but Romero declined to lower his window. Agents informed him that they would break the glass if he did not follow instructions. Romero then accelerated away, hitting one officer during his escape attempt.
A short pursuit followed, during which Romero entered a parking lot and deliberately collided with an ICE vehicle, injuring a second officer. The struck officer discharged two shots in self-defense, though no one was struck by the gunfire. Romero proceeded to drive toward his apartment building, where he again rammed an ICE vehicle. He then left the SUV and tried to reach his residence on foot. Pursuing officers caught up to him and took him into custody after he resisted forcefully, including biting one agent.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that “Romero was admitted into the United States in 2024 by the Biden Administration through the CBP One app, which released over a million completely unvetted illegal aliens into the interior of the United States.” Under President Donald J. Trump, CBP One has been repurposed as CBP Home, which facilitates migrants willing to self-deport in exchange for $,1000 and free airfare. This has been increased to $3,000 over the Christmas period.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Maine, December 2025, with related incidents in Somalia.
💬KEY QUOTE: “You can’t rob a bank for millions of dollars. You shouldn’t be able to rob taxpayers of millions of dollars and get away with it. There absolutely needs to be a criminal investigation into this immediately.” – Matt Harrington
🎯IMPACT: The allegations highlight concerns over the misuse of taxpayer funds in the Somali community, and raise questions about oversight in Maine’s Medicaid and welfare systems.
IN FULL
Abdullahi Ali, executive director of Gateway Community Services in Maine, is facing allegations that his nonprofit defrauded taxpayers through Maine’s Medicaid program and the federal Paycheck Protection Program. Whistleblower Christopher Bernardini has alleged that Gateway submitted false documentation for services that were never delivered, resulting in reimbursements from state and federal funds.
During the period he was overseeing Gateway, Ali was also reportedly campaigning to become president of Jubbaland, a semi-autonomous region in Somalia. Reports say Ali claimed he raised money for the Jubaland Somaliarmy to purchase weapons, drawing scrutiny over potential foreign political and military involvement while managing a U.S.-funded nonprofit.
The controversy intensified after Steve Robinson of The Maine Wire reported that Ali had threatened a journalist in Somalia who had shared reporting on the allegations. Robinson said Ali’s family members, including his son and a cousin, have allegedly placed a bounty on the journalist’s head. Robinson has publicly questioned why Governor Janet Mills (D) continues to direct public funding to Gateway Community Services despite the claims.
Gateway Community Services has denied wrongdoing and characterized the accusations as racist. Bernardini and other former employees have provided detailed accounts alleging systematic fraud within the organization. Maine Republican state Senator Matt Harrington has called for immediate criminal investigations, saying the alleged misuse of taxpayer money highlights serious failures in oversight and accountability.
“You can’t rob a bank for millions of dollars. You shouldn’t be able to rob taxpayers of millions of dollars and get away with it. There absolutely needs to be a criminal investigation into this immediately,” Harrington stated.
The Maine case has been compared to major Medicaid and welfare fraud prosecutions in Minnesota, where federal authorities have charged suspects tied to nonprofit and social services networks with submitting fraudulent claims for services that were never provided. In one recent Minnesota case, a Somali-linked defendant pleaded guilty to stealing millions of dollars from Medicaid and food assistance programs. Federal prosecutors have said those schemes were part of a broader network “that has stolen billions of dollars in taxpayer money.”
Federal estimates suggest that Somali-linked welfare fraud in Minnesota could reach as high as $9 billion, spanning programs related to food aid, housing, and healthcare. Critics argue that lax enforcement and political concerns about appearing discriminatory allowed the schemes to continue for years.

💬KEY QUOTE: Israel risks “undermining the [U.S.] 20 Point Plan [for ending the Gaza war] and prospects for the long-term peace and security,” said Hamish Falconer, Britain’s Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
🎯IMPACT: The approval increases the number of settlements in the West Bank by nearly 50 percent under the current government.
IN FULL
Israel’s cabinet has approved 19 new settlements in the West Bank, according to Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich, prompting renewed friction with international governments and human rights groups who say the move violates international law and undermines peace. Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement watchdog, said the decision raises the number of settlements in the West Bank to 210, up from 141 in 2022. The approvals also retroactively legalize several previously unauthorized outposts and establish new settlements on land from which Palestinians have been evacuated.
Israel’s incumbent coalition government has pushed aggressively to entrench Israeli presence in the West Bank. Critics argue the policy weakens diplomatic efforts to end the Gaza war.
British Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer criticized the decision, saying it risks “undermining the [U.S.] 20 Point Plan [for ending the Gaza war] and prospects for the long-term peace and security,” a key foreign policy goal of the Trump administration.
The settlement decision has heightened tensions between Israel and the United States. In October, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized an Israeli parliamentary move related to West Bank annexation, calling it “a very stupid political stunt” and saying, “I personally take some insult to it,” as he had been in the country. He added that “the policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel.”
Relations were further strained in December after the White House strongly rebuked Israel for breaking a Gaza ceasefire, warning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that such actions could damage U.S.-led peace efforts. At the same time, Washington is continuing to provide substantial military support to Israel. Earlier this month, Congress passed a sweeping defense bill that includes roughly $650 million in aid for Israel, alongside further financial support for Ukraine.

💬KEY QUOTE: “The United States Coast Guard is in active pursuit of a sanctioned ‘dark fleet’ vessel that is part of Venezuela’s illegalsanctions evasion.” – U.S. official.
🎯IMPACT: This marks the second sanctioned oil tanker seizure near Venezuela in recent days, increasing tensions with the Maduro regime.
IN FULL
U.S. authorities are pursuing a sanctioned oil tanker near Venezuelan waters, according to reports. The vessel, identified as the Bella 1, is believed to be heading toward Venezuela to load fuel. The Bella 1 was sanctioned by the United States in June 2024 for transporting cargo on behalf of a Hezbollah-linked company associated with the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF). A U.S. official said, “The United States Coast Guard is in active pursuit of a sanctioned ‘dark fleet’ vessel that is part of Venezuela’s illegal sanctions evasion.” The official said the tanker is operating under a false flag and is subject to a judicial seizure order.
Other reports claim that the tanker is flying Panamanian flags and previously carried Venezuelan oil to China in 2021. Reuters also reported that, according to tankertrackers.com, the vessel has transported Iranian crude in the past.
The pursuit follows the U.S. seizure of another oil tanker, the Centuries, earlier on Sunday near Venezuela. That Panama-flagged vessel was reportedly bound for Asia when it was intercepted. U.S. forces have carried out multiple similar operations in recent weeks, including a high-profile boarding in which American personnel were filmed airdropping onto a seized tanker.
These actions come amid a broader U.S. crackdown on Venezuela. Earlier this month, President Donald J. Trump ordered a full blockade of sanctioned oil tankers departing from or heading to the country, escalating pressure on the government of Marxist strongman Nicolás Maduro. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has reaffirmed the administration’s policy, saying, “President Trump has been clear: the blockade of sanctioned oil tankers departing from, or bound for, Venezuela will remain in full force until Maduro’s criminal enterprise returns every stolen American asset.”
In response to the seizures and the blockade, Venezuela has moved to protect its oil shipments. The Venezuelan navy has begun escorting tankers leaving the country’s ports, a step the government says is necessary to defend its sovereignty and commercial interests.
The Maduro government has strongly condemned the U.S. actions. Venezuelan officials have described the seizures as acts of “piracy” and have called on the United Nations Security Council to address the issue at an upcoming meeting. Maduro himself denounced the U.S. operations on social media, labeling them “Corsair Piracy.”

🎯IMPACT: Federal funding for Smithsonian museums is now conditioned on adherence to President Donald J. Trump’s executive order and compliance with the review process.

The Trump administration is threatening to withhold federal funding from the Smithsonian Institution unless the museum system provides additional documentation for a federal content review. In a letter sent Thursday to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley and White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought said the materials previously submitted “fell far short of what was requested, and the overwhelming majority of requested items remain outstanding.”
The review is part of a broader initiative launched by the administration this past summer to examine exhibits and other public programming at several Smithsonian museums. Officials said the goal is to ensure compliance with President Donald J. Trump’s executive order seeking “to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.” The order directs museums to evaluate whether their exhibits, educational materials, and events reflect “American ideals” and to make corrections if content is deemed ideologically driven or divisive.
The Smithsonian Institution, founded in the mid-19th century, includes 21 museums, 14 research centers, and the National Zoo. It is one of the nation’s leading cultural and research organizations, responsible for preserving and interpreting American history, science, and culture for the public. Recent years have seen controversy over some programming choices, including events featuring drag performers.
The White House has tied federal funding for the museums directly to compliance with the content review process. Administration officials have emphasized that failure to provide the requested documentation could jeopardize ongoing funding, signaling a heightened level of oversight of how federal dollars support cultural institutions.
