Vivek Ramaswamy’s departure from the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, was confirmed shortly after President Donald J. Trump’s inauguration on Monday. Ramaswamy, who previously ran for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was initially expected to lead the commission alongside tech mogul Elon Musk.
“Vivek Ramaswamy played a critical role in helping us create DOGE,” stated Anna Kelly, a spokesman for the commission. “He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE, based on the structure that we announced today. We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last 2 months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again.”
Vivek Ramaswamy has said he intends to run for Governor of Ohio. The son of Indian immigrants, he caused controversy in the MAGA movement in recent weeks by appearing to back H-1B visas, which companies—particularly in the tech industry—use to import immigrants to the U.S. en masse, most often from India. A large majority of Americans oppose the program.
