Vice President J.D. Vance revealed on Tuesday that he will join his wife Usha on a diplomatic trip to Greenland later this week. Usha Vance was initially slated to travel with several other Trump White House officials and attend the island’s annual dog sled race. However, with Vice President Vance now joining his wife, the couple is slated to meet with U.S. Space Force personnel stationed on the northwest coast of Greenland.
“Hey guys, it’s J.D. Vance, the Vice President, and you know, there was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself,” the Vice President said in a video posted to X (formerly Twitter). “So, I’m going to join her. I’m going to visit some of our Guardians in the Space Force on the northwest coast of Greenland and also just check out what’s going on with the security there of Greenland.”
GREENLAND’S STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE.
“As you know, it is really important; a lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and of course to threaten the people of Greenland,” Vance added. “Speaking for President Trump, we want to reinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland because we think it’s important to protecting the security of the entire world.”
Greenland sits at a strategic point in the North Atlantic and Arctic Circle, with the potential to provide critical air defense stations and naval basing for U.S. military forces. Additionally, the massive island is rich in rare earth minerals, which are increasingly becoming critical to technological development and supply chain security. Both features of the island have been motivating factors in President Donald J. Trump’s overtures to bring the island into the U.S. fold.
