On Friday, First Lady Melania Trump revealed that back-channel talks that she has held with Russian President Vladimir Putin have resulted in a pact to bring back Ukrainian children to their homeland. During a short White House briefing focused on children displaced in the ongoing Russian war with Ukraine, Mrs. Trump signalled that significant headway has been made, stating that eight children have been returned home in the last 24 hours.
In her remarks, the First Lady disclosed that Putin had replied to the message she sent him in August concerning the children. Melania Trump also expressed worries about Ukrainians who were underage when displaced by the conflict but are now adults living in Russia. According to her, the Russian government has committed to sending them back, as well.
“Again, this remains an ongoing effort,” Melania Trump stated, adding, “Plans are already underway to reunify more children in the immediate future. I hope peace will come soon. It can begin with our children.”
