A group of around 400 Minnesota Department of Human Services employees is accusing Governor Tim Walz (D) of enabling and then attempting to cover up a massive Medicaid fraud scheme enacted by members of the state’s Somali immigrant community. The claims, shared on social media through an X (formerly Twitter) account representing the government workers, allege that Gov. Walz retaliated against whistleblowers who attempted to expose the fraud.
“Tim Walz is 100% responsible for massive fraud in Minnesota. We let Tim Walz know of fraud early on, hoping for a partnership in stopping fraud but no, we got the opposite response,” the workers wrote. “Tim Walz systematically retaliated against whistleblowers using monitoring, threats, repression, and did his best to discredit fraud reports. Instead of partnership, we got the full weight of retaliation by Tim Walz, certain DFL members and an indifferent mainstream media.”
“In addition to retaliating against whistleblowers, Tim Walz disempowered the Office of the Legislative Auditor, allowing agencies to disregard their audit findings and guidance. Media and politicians supporting Tim Walz or the DFL-agenda attacked whistleblowers who were trying to raise red flags on fraudulent activities,” they added.
Around 100 autism clinics in Minnesota are currently being investigated for Medicaid billing fraud involving autism treatments, with the scheme being linked to a number of members of the Somali immigrant community in Minneapolis. It is estimated that over $1 billion in taxpayer dollars was stolen through the scheme, with some of the ill-gotten funds then funneled to Somalia in support of Islamist terrorist organizations, such as al-Qaeda franchise al-Shabaab.
The National Pulse reported in April of 2024 that 70 suspects connected to Somali-linked nonprofits, like Feeding Our Future and Partners in Nutrition, were charged with defrauding taxpayers of a quarter of a billion dollars in pandemic food aid, subsequently facing trial for their crimes. In August of this year, Guhaad Hashi Said, a former associate and campaign “enforcer” for Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in connection with a pandemic-era food fraud scheme.
In a separate case from November 2024, two Somali men in Minnesota received 30-year prison terms for their involvement in the 2012 kidnapping of American journalist Michael Scott Moore off the Somali coast.
Gov. Walz—who served as former Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election—has sought to forge strong ties to the Somali community, boasting in 2021 that Somalis have made “vast contributions” to Minnesota and that “the Somali community’s footprint on the cultural and demographic landscape of our state is invaluable.”
