The Netherlands is placing American transgenders who are claiming refugee status because of President Donald J. Trump in the country’s infamous Ter Apel refugee camp. While Dutch officials describe the facility as a “permanent reception center,” the facility appears more like a prison—with extensive fencing surrounding the encampment and a heavy guard presence.

Notably, the presence of the American asylum seekers isn’t sitting well with the nearly 2,000 other migrants from around the world housed at Ter Apel. “My dream is to go to America or the UK. America for me is the paradise,” a 21-year-old North African woman living at the camp said in a recent interview. “You can work, you can make a million if you have a good idea. Why they come here?”

Still, several dozen Americans have left the United States since President Trump’s inauguration over a year ago and sought asylum in the Netherlands. Jane-Michelle Arc, a transgender from San Francisco, flew to the Netherlands last April and promptly asked a Dutch customs agent how to seek refugee status. “And they laughed because: what’s this big dumb American doing here asking about asylum? And then they realized I was serious,” Arc said.

The claims being made by the so-called American refugees are bizarre. In Arc’s case, he asserts that President Trump’s United States had become so terrifying and dangerous that he would no longer leave his San Francisco home “unless there was an Uber waiting outside.” However, he would likely face more danger from unchecked crime in the greater Bay Area than the President.

Transgender and LGBTQ refugees are kept in separate housing from the camp’s general population—which includes asylum seekers from places like Syria, Libya, Sudan, and other countries. It is expected that every American claiming refugee status will be denied asylum and deported back to the United States. Over the last several years, only around a couple of dozen U.S. passport holders have received asylum in the Netherlands—all children and all dependents on parents who are of Yemeni, Syrian, or Turkish origin.

Since the start of his second term last year, President Donald J. Trump has pushed an effort to clean up Washington, D.C., and crack down on crime in the city. “Homes are built for people, not for corporations, and America will not become a nation of renters,” President Trump told WEF attendees. “That’s why I have signed an executive order banning large institutional investors from buying single-family homes. It’s just not fair to the public. They’re not able to buy a house.”

While the housing policy Executive Order does not ban large institutional investors from acquiring single-family homes outright, the directive places strict limits on conventional mortgage guarantees sought by investment firms when purchasing single-family residences. Notably, the measure does not impact cash buyers or investment firms that use financing not backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

A federal agent fired his weapon during a law enforcement operation in Compton, California, on Wednesday after a suspect used his vehicle to strike officers while attempting to avoid arrest, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident occurred during a targeted operation to apprehend William Eduardo Moran Carballo, a Salvadoran national accused of involvement in human smuggling. DHS said Carballo had previously been arrested twice for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and was the subject of a final order of removal issued by an immigration judge in 2019.

“In a dangerous attempt to evade arrest, this criminal illegal alien weaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement. Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots,” a DHS spokesman said. Authorities said the suspect was not hit by the gunfire and fled on foot before being taken into custody. A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was injured during the encounter, while the suspect was unharmed.

DHS, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), argued that sanctuary policies and ongoing violent anti-ICE protests have emboldened criminals to resist arrest. “These dangerous attempts to evade arrest have surged since sanctuary politicians, including Governor [Gavin] Newsom, have encouraged illegal aliens to evade arrest and provided guides advising illegal aliens how to recognize ICE, block entry, and defy arrest,” the agency said. The agency noted there has been a 3,200 percent increase in vehicle attacks against law enforcement.

The Compton confrontation comes amid a series of recent attacks targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal officers. In one case, federal authorities offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the capture of an illegal immigrant accused of ramming ICE agents with a vehicle. In another case, an illegal immigrant received a 20-year federal prison sentence for a violent assault on an ICE officer.

Additional incidents have included a California professor accused of attacking ICE agents with tear gas and a reported 1,000 percent increase in assaults on ICE personnel following a sniper attack, according to federal officials.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) informed Democrats in a private meeting that they intend to vote against a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The move is largely seen as an attempt by Democrat leaders to placate a large bloc of their more progressive caucus members who are demanding the agency be defunded over ongoing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations targeting illegal immigrants across the country.

These include $20 million allocated for body cameras for ICE personnel, although the overall ICE budget remains unchanged.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), who helped negotiate the broader spending package, emphasized the urgency of passing the bill to prevent a government shutdown. While acknowledging the bill’s limitations in securing the progressive Democrat demands for substantial ICE reforms, she noted its benefits for other agencies like TSA and FEMA.

A woman told an English court that President Donald J. Trump‘s son Barron Trump “helped save my life” after he contacted police when he realized she was being assaulted, according to testimony heard this week in London. Jurors were told that Barron Trump was in the United States when he received a FaceTime call from the woman, with whom he is friends, and soon realized she was being attacked. Speaking to a police operator, Trump said, “I just got a call from a girl I know. She’s getting beaten up.”

Trump described what he saw on the video call: “I just saw a ceiling and could hear screaming. I could see a guy’s head on the phone, and then the camera turns to her crying and getting hit.” He made the report around 2:20 AM London time in January last year.

The court heard that the alleged attacker, Russian national Matvei Rumiantsev, had earlier become angry after attempting to contact the woman. According to reports, prosecutors said Rumiantsev later went to her home, punched her repeatedly, kicked her in the stomach, and shouted insults at her during the video call with Barron, calling her a “whore” and a “slut.”

During her testimony, the woman praised Barron’s actions. “He helped save my life,” she said. “That call was like a sign from God at that moment.”

Jurors also heard the recording of the emergency call, during which the operator asked Barron how he knew the woman. Trump appeared frustrated by the questioning and urged police to act quickly. He also told operators that it took him several minutes to find the correct phone number for British emergency services from abroad.

Rumiantsev is facing multiple charges, including assault, two counts of rape, intentional strangulation, and perverting the course of justice.

The case comes amid broader concerns about violent crime and public safety in the United Kingdom, particularly in London. Police have particularly struggled to contain violence at large public events, with mass arrests becoming increasingly common, including more than 140 arrests on the opening day of London’s annual Afro-Caribbean Notting Hill Carnival last year.
