🎯IMPACT: Amtrak has ambitious plans to double ridership to 66 million by 2040.
Amtrak has recorded a strong rebound in passenger numbers, serving 34.5 million riders in fiscal year 2025, compared to 32.8 million the previous year. That marks a 5.1 percent rise from 2024. The railroad also reported $2.7 billion in adjusted ticket revenue, reflecting a 10.4 percent gain, alongside total operating revenue of $3.9 billion, which grew by 9.1 percent.
The busiest Northeast Corridor route—linking cities including Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.—experienced an 8.1 percent jump in passengers. Long-distance services increased by 4.2 percent, boosted in part by the new Floridian route running from Chicago to Miami. State-supported corridors showed even sharper growth, with the Borealis service between the Twin Cities and Chicago posting a remarkable 140.7 percent surge in ridership.
Infrastructure spending has fueled much of this progress. In 2025, Amtrak invested a record $5.5 billion in capital improvements, of which $1.1 billion was allocated toward track and structure maintenance. Another $182 million was allocated for station enhancements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, improving accessibility for passengers.
Expanded offerings and new routes further drove the increase. The Mardi Gras service between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, welcomed 18,000 riders in its debut month. Upcoming high-speed NextGen Acela trains and the new Airo fleet are expected to elevate service quality, while marketing efforts and better onboard features have helped draw additional travelers.
Amtrak plans to continually upgrade its equipment and facilities. The company has set a goal to double annual ridership to 66 million by 2040, supported by initiatives such as the replacement of the Portal North Bridge and repairs to the East River Tunnel, aimed at reducing bottlenecks.
