❓WHAT HAPPENED: A Deltapoll survey commissioned by the National Education Union (NEU) shows teachers in England skew overwhelmingly to the political left, and are lurching even further in that direction.
👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: The survey involved 3,751 NEU members in England.
📍WHEN & WHERE: Conducted from December 12-15, 2023, in England.
💬KEY QUOTE: “Conditions have gotten worse, and teachers are running on empty,” complained Daniel Kebede, NEU General Secretary.
🎯IMPACT: The poll indicates a potential radicalization of the teaching profession, which is likely to influence their students.
The recent survey highlights a dramatic shift in political preferences among National Education Union (NEU) members in England, with the formerly fringe, far-left Green Party now leading at 37 percent—a significant increase from previous elections. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, which is somewhat less far-left than the Greens, has seen a steep decline to 29 percent since it gained office in 2024. Meanwhile, right-leaning parties such as Nigel Farage’s Reform, which tops the polls among the general public, are on just 10 percent support, while the formerly governing Conservatives (Tories) are on only six percent support.
The Green Party has historically emphasized environmentalism and climate change, and at one time opposed mass migration on the grounds that perpetual population growth was damaging the environment. Now, however, it has fully embraced pro-Palestinian activism, mass migration, so-called social justice, and progressive causes such as transgenderism, allowing it to peel ethnic minorities and ideological leftists away from Labour. NEU General Secretary Daniel Kebede has complained that, even with Labour in power, teachers are facing deteriorating conditions and “running on empty.”
Deltapoll’s survey results suggest a potential radicalization within the teaching profession, with this radicalism likely influencing younger generations in the classroom.
