A slate of candidates for the Virginia Republican Party‘s state central committee is touting a fake endorsement from former President Donald J. Trump ahead of a local party convention on Saturday, The National Pulse can reveal. Although claiming to be grassroots conservatives backed by Trump, the candidates have extensive ties to special interest lobbies and anti-Trump political campaigns. One candidate is allegedly an outright Never Trumper.
The fake Trump endorsement appears on a mailer for candidates David Botkins, Lauren Keiser, and Chris Winslow. The National Pulse spoke to sources close to former President Trump, who indicated that the 2024 Republican presidential nominee has not endorsed in the Virginia Republican Party central committee race.
DAVID BOTKINS.
David Botkins, one of the Virginia GOP central committee candidates, is a Dominion Energy lobbyist who actively pushed Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) to enter the 2024 Republican presidential primary against former President Trump. A photo of Botkins posted on Facebook in August of 2023 shows the corporate lobbyist proudly wearing a button promoting Glenn Youngkin for President in 2024. In addition, Harry Kelso — who served as one of Nikki Haley‘s 2024 Virginia presidential primary campaign co-chairs — has acted as a surrogate for Botkins at several local Republican Party events.
FEC records suggest the Dominion Energy lobbyist never contributed to Trump’s presidential campaign in either the 2016 or 2020 cycles. One campaign that Botkins supported, however, was the short-lived congressional campaign of Taylor Keeney.
The National Pulse was able to review some of Keeney’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) in which she expressed opposition to Trump’s 2016 candidacy. Keeney instead backed Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). In one post, Keeney appears to quote her husband, Carter, stating: “Trump said the same thing I did yesterday about (topic), so I’m probably wrong.”
LAUREN KEISER.
Lauren Keiser is a communications and market coordinator with the Virginia Manufacturers Association. Multiple sources who spoke with The National Pulse describe Keiser as one of the most left-wing Republicans with whom they’ve ever worked. In an email to her supporters, former Virginia State Senator and stalwart conservative Amanda Chase alluded to Keiser being a staunch Never Trumper. Sources have confirmed this accusation with The National Pulse, noting that Keiser has locked down her social media presence after receiving pushback for her opposition to Trump from fellow Virginia Republicans.
CHRIS WINSLOW.
A former member of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, Chris Winslow is a Virginia lawyer with a long history of work in the state’s House of Delegates. Winslow, Botkins, and Keiser are backed by the Republican Party of Virginia’s first vice-chair, Kristi Way. Way previously served as chief of staff to former Congressman Eric Cantor (R-VA). Conservative Tea Party candidate Dave Brat ousted Cantor from office during the 2014 Republican primary.
Anti-Trump candidates pretending to have Trump endorsements is scarcely new, though this slate is amongst the worst offenders of the fraudulent behavior.
