Disgraced lawyer Michael Cohen‘s attorney, Danya Perry, is arguing the serial perjurer‘s acknowledgment of his past dishonesty lends credibility to his testimony in former President Donald J. Trump‘s Manhattan-based hush money trial. Perry made the claim during an interview on Monday with Joe Biden‘s former press secretary, Jen Psaki, on MSNBC.
Perry emphasized that Cohen has been forthcoming about his previous misconduct, suggesting this transparency makes him a more reliable witness for the prosecution. “The takeaway here is that he has made his peace with his admittedly checkered past,” Perry said, adding: “And he was also truthful about the many lies and mistakes he’s made along the way.”
Psaki pressed Perry on Cohen‘s decision to waive attorney-client privilege with Robert Costello, a lawyer who had advised Cohen during his legal troubles in 2018. The defense called Costello after the former federal prosecutor and criminal defense attorney testified before Congress that Cohen was continuing to lie on the witness stand. Psaki asked Perry if Cohen had any regrets regarding that decision.
“Years ago, he waived his attorney-client privilege when it comes to Robert Costello,” Psaki remarked. “Do you regret that? Should he regret that?” Perry responded, “I don’t think there were any blows that landed. I think Michael testified exactly what that relationship was and why he stayed at arms’ length from Bob Costello. I think the jury saw that on full display today.”
Perry further contended that the defense’s attempts to discredit Cohen rely on information Cohen himself disclosed earlier. “I think Michael has been nothing but forthright with this prosecution team,” Perry asserted. “Some of the so-called ‘aha’ or ‘gotcha’ moments were given to the defense care of Michael Cohen.”
