The Detroit Police Department announced they’ve suspended Lieutenant Brandon Cole from duty while internal affairs investigates an accusation he made a racially charged comment to a pro-Hamas protestor last Sunday. Demonstrators had gathered outside the venue hosting the NAACP’s Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner, where Joe Biden was speaking.
Cellphone footage made public after the incident appeared to show Lt. Cole shouting, “Why don’t you just go back to Mexico?” His comments were directed specifically at a woman named Lexi Zeidan, a Palestinian-American who was among the protestors. Zeidan claims the exchange was racially motivated. “I mean, immediately, I said I wasn’t even Mexican,” Zaidan said in a local television interview. She added: What you see is a lieutenant who is supposed to be surveilling and ensuring things remain peaceful and calm, only engaging in conversation with protestors that are clearly unprofessional.”
Lt. Cole’s body camera footage, however, captured the entire exchange and showed that his comments were in no way related to the protestor’s assumed race. Instead, Cole was referring to a recent vacation Zaidan had taken to Mexico, which she posted extensively about on her public Instagram page.
At a Wednesday news conference, the Detroit Police Department stated that Cole had commented on one of Zaidan’s social media posts before the Sunday protest — suggesting he was already familiar with her travels. Michael McGinnis, head of internal affairs, noted, “It’s evident from the video that there is some sort of knowledge both ways between the officer and the protestor, and the other way as well.” Department officials also revealed that prior to his exchange with Zaidan, protestors had called out Lt. Cole by name — suggesting they intended to purposefully aggravate the officer.
