Representative Jared Golden (D-ME) says he believes former President Donald J. Trump will win re-election to the White House this November. In an opinion editorial for the Bangor Daily News, the Maine Democrat said, “While I don’t plan to vote for him, Donald Trump is going to win. And I’m OK with that.”
Golden, who represents a district that voted for Trump by a seven-point margin in 2020, accused Joe Biden and national Democrats of trying to scare voters with their rhetoric about Trump being an existential threat to democracy. “Democrats’ post-debate hand-wringing is based on the idea that a Trump victory is not just a political loss, but a unique threat to our democracy,” the Maine Congressman states, adding: “I reject the premise.”
“Unlike Biden and many others, I refuse to participate in a campaign to scare voters with the idea that Trump will end our democratic system,” Golden continues.
The Maine Democrat strikes a strong anti-Biden tone, signaling—at least in his district—that any association with the 81-year-old incumbent is a political liability. “This election is about the economy, not democracy,” Goldman writes, arguing: “When it comes to our economy, our Congress matters far more than who occupies the White House.”
Golden believes Biden deserves little or no credit for several of his supposed signature pieces of legislation. According to the Democrat Congressman, Biden had little to do with the drafting and passage of the CHIPS Act and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which he contends were purely congressional undertakings.
Golden’s opinion editorial, while sure to rankle almost the entirety of the Democratic Party, is a calculated move. The Democrat faces tough re-election prospects, and moving closer to Trump could sway just enough voters for him to retain his seat.
