Former President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to visit one of the most important Catholic shrines for the Polish-American community on the same day as Polish President Andrzej Duda. Trump is scheduled to visit the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, this weekend, likely on September 22.
Established in 1955, the shrine has a noted history of significant visitors. Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, later known as Pope St. John Paul II, visited the site in 1969 and 1976. President Ronald Reagan also visited the Shrine, as did George H.W. Bush as a Republican presidential primary candidate in 1980.
Tradition holds that St. Luke the Evangelist painted the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, and St. Helen found it in Jerusalem in the 4th century. The painting eventually found its way to Poland in 1382.
Trump’s decision to visit comes after his 2020 trip to the St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C., which occurred shortly before he signed an executive order expanding international religious freedom support.
In a recent display of his affinity for the Catholic faith, Trump posted an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on his social media accounts. The post was intended to mark the Catholic feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While Trump himself is not Catholic, his wife, Melania Trump, is openly Roman Catholic.
The former Republican President enjoys broad support from several Catholic organizations, particularly pro-life Catholics. Earlier this month, the Trump campaign announced the “Catholics for Trump” coalition, which is committed to religious liberty and family values.
Pope Francis, meanwhile, also weighed in on the upcoming election, calling for Catholics to pick the “lesser evil” between a candidate who kicks out migrants and one who “kills babies.”
