A scandalous music video shot last year in a New York City Catholic church appears to have kicked off—at least in part—a federal investigation into associates of the city’s mayor, Eric Adams. The Catholic priest at the center of the music video controversy now appears to be one of several targets of the federal inquiry into allegations of public corruption that may bring down Mayor Adams, a Democrat.
Last October, pop star Sabrina Carpenter came under fire after filming a risque music video for her song Feather in a Brooklyn-area Catholic church. Carpenter can be seen writhing suggestively on the church’s altar—a blasphemous act of desecration. The fact that Carpenter used a real church and desecrated an actual altar may have gone unnoticed if not for a traditionalist Catholic social media account with the handle “@traddingtonbear.”
The “trad” Catholic social media user posted an inquiry he made with the Brooklyn diocese and its bishop, prompting a quick backlash against the priest and Carpenter in Catholic media. Subsequently, local and religious press frenzy around the controversy drew unwanted attention to Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello—the priest who authorized the music video shoot. Last week, Gigantiello was the subject of a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) subpoena examining business ties between the priest and Frank Carone, Mayor Eric Adams’ ex-chief of staff.
Media responses from the Diocese of Brooklyn on the subpoena direct the press to the coverage of the Sabrina Carpenter controversy, suggesting that the video and news coverage did help draw Gigantiello to the FBI’s attention. Currently, numerous associates of Mayor Adams have been raided by the FBI, while at least one individual has already pleaded guilty to corruption charges.
