Former staffers for ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Republican-in-name-only (RINO) lawmakers on Capitol Hill are taking a victory lap after undermining President-elect Donald J. Trump’s initial nominee for U.S. Attorney General, former Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL). The effort to block the Gaetz nomination is seen as sabotaging Trump’s incoming administration and a significant political risk for those who spearheaded the betrayal, as the President-elect won a significant electoral mandate in the 2024 presidential race.
After Gaetz announced yesterday that he would withdraw his name from consideration to head the Department of Justice (DOJ), former McCarthy staffer Brittany Martinez declared “justice has been served.” The remark was likely meant as a double entendre, referring both to the spurious allegations of sexual impropriety against Gaetz and his spearheading the ouster of Martinez’s former boss, Kevin McCarthy, as Speaker.
Gaetz has consistently denied the criminal allegations against him, and the Biden government’s DOJ declined to prosecute a case after a thorough investigation into them.
Martinez’s remarks were echoed by Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY), a moderate Republican and close ally of McCarthy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Lawler also declared, “Justice has been served,” and posted a meme image of the former House Speaker hoisting a gavel with lasers emitting from his eyes.
MCCARTHY’S OUSTER & REVENGE.
Late last year, former Rep. Gaetz led an effort that saw McCarthy’s removal as House Speaker, a position McCarthy held for under nine months. Tensions between McCarthy and Gaetz have remained high, with McCarthy supporting Gaetz’s rival in a Republican primary earlier this year, although Gaetz easily retained his seat.
McCarthy has also aimed to counter others involved in his ousting—efforts that have been unsuccessful.
Following Gaetz’s withdrawal, President-elect Trump nominated Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, as his choice for U.S. Attorney General.
